This Texas Town Keeps Seniors Active Year-Round For $15

Every morning, seniors gather at the Sam Johnson Recreation Center for Adults 50+ in Plano, where the cardio and weight room, wellness center, café, and billiards room buzz with activity.

This isn’t some stripped-down community center with a few folding chairs and outdated equipment.

The center received a yearlong renovation that added a new 2,800-square-foot cardio and weight room overlooking Harrington Park, and a whole lot more wellness amenities.

For anyone over 50 looking to stay active, healthy, and connected, Plano has quietly built one of the most impressive senior recreation scenes in Texas.

What Sam Johnson Recreation Center Offers

The center hosts numerous activities, including Bingo, bridge, knitting, and Tuesday night dances, but that barely scratches the surface.

Activities include Mah Jongg, Art Therapy, Mental Aerobics, Bunco, Writer’s Group, Texas Hold’Em, Bridge, “42” Dominoes, Pinochle, Caregiver Support Group, Canasta, Bocce, Blood Pressure Check, Birthday Parties, Hand, Knee & Foot, and more.

The center offers a variety of fitness classes, social activities, educational programs, and recreational opportunities that encourage community engagement and healthy living.

Members can participate in group exercise sessions ranging from low-impact aerobics to strength training designed specifically for older adults.

Water aerobics classes take advantage of indoor pools, while line dancing combines social connection with cardiovascular exercise.

The center is open Monday through Saturday (closed Sundays), with hours extending until 8 PM or 9 PM most evenings, making it easy to fit activities into any schedule.

Membership costs just $15 per year for Plano residents and $25 per year for non-residents—an almost embarrassingly good value considering what’s offered.

Beyond the Recreation Center

Plano’s commitment to senior wellness extends far beyond one building. Programming for Adults 50+ is offered at all Plano recreation centers, meaning you can find activities close to wherever you live in this sprawling city.

The Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center, Carpenter Park Recreation Center, and Liberty Recreation Center all host age-specific programming throughout the week.

Senior softball leagues play at multiple athletic complexes across the city. Bocce ball courts see regular use from competitive leagues and casual players alike.

Pickleball—the fastest-growing sport among seniors—has dedicated courts and organized play times at several locations.

Walking groups meet at different parks throughout the week, providing both exercise and social connection for those who prefer outdoor activities.

The Trail System

Arbor Hills Nature Preserve features 3 miles of paved trails, 3 miles of natural hiking paths, and a 2.8-mile mountain bike loop, making it one of the most popular destinations for active seniors.

The paved trails are flat, well-maintained, and perfect for walking, jogging, or cycling at any fitness level.

At 800 acres, Oak Point Park is Plano’s biggest and most versatile green space, featuring approximately 8 miles of paved trails and 5 miles of natural paths along Rowlett Creek.

Bob Woodruff Park Trail connects to the Santa Fe Trail and Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve Trail, allowing you to travel all over East Plano from the southern end almost to Allen on the northern end.

The trail system throughout Plano is extensive and interconnected. You can walk or bike for miles without crossing major roads, thanks to thoughtful planning and dedicated greenbelts.

Start Moving Today

The secret to Plano’s thriving senior community isn’t complicated—it’s providing accessible, affordable, diverse activities that keep people moving, learning, and connecting with others.

Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast looking to maintain an active lifestyle or someone who hasn’t exercised regularly in years, there’s a place for you here.

Check the Plano Parks and Recreation website for the current activity calendar, and consider visiting Sam Johnson Recreation Center to see what all the excitement is about.

For $15 a year, you might just discover that staying active and engaged in your later years isn’t just possible—it’s actually fun.
