This Hidden Gem Serves Unforgettable Burgers That Locals Swear By

Some places don’t need to chase trends. They just keep doing what they’ve always done, and people keep coming back for more.

That’s the story of Burger House, a Dallas institution that’s been serving up no-frills, stick-to-your-ribs burgers since 1951.

While flashy new burger concepts come and go across the Metroplex, this old-school joint has earned the kind of loyalty you can’t manufacture.

Generations of Dallasites have grown up here, and they’re still bringing their own kids and grandkids through the door.

Back when Central Expressway was still just four lanes and “I Love Lucy” was the hottest thing on television, a Greek immigrant named Prometheus “Jack” Koustabardis opened a tiny burger stand on Hillcrest Avenue in the Park Cities.

He kept things simple from the start: burgers, fries, shakes, and malts. What set Jack apart wasn’t some complicated recipe or gourmet ingredients.

It was a proprietary seasoning salt—a blend of herbs, garlic, and pepper that he’d shake liberally over everything that came off his griddle.

Customers went crazy for it, and more than seven decades later, people are still trying to figure out what’s in that stuff.

Today, the restaurant still makes everything the same way Jack did back in ’51, and that consistency is exactly what keeps regulars coming back week after week.

Where to Find This Dallas Legend

Burger House operates three locations across the Dallas area, each with that same no-nonsense neighborhood vibe.

The original spot on Hillcrest Avenue sits in the heart of the Park Cities, just a stone’s throw from SMU and Highland Park High School.

This is where it all started, and walking through the door feels a bit like stepping back in time.

The Mockingbird Lane location serves the Lakewood and East Dallas crowd, while the Addison spot on Marsh Lane near Brookhaven College offers something the original couldn’t: a drive-thru.

The Burgers That Built a Legacy

Let’s talk about what you came for: the burgers. Burger House takes a decidedly old-school approach, cooking thin 80/20 chuck patties on a blistering flat-top griddle.

These aren’t thick, juice-dripping behemoths—they’re classically thin, pressed down with a grill press to get those crispy, caramelized edges that make a smash-style burger so satisfying.

The buns get toasted on the griddle right alongside the meat, soaking up just a touch of that savory goodness.

Every burger comes standard with mustard, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions, though you can get those onions grilled at no extra charge. American cheese is the default, but Swiss and cheddar are available if you ask.

The real magic, though, happens when everything gets hit with a cloud of Jack’s famous seasoning salt. It’s the kind of simple perfection that makes you wonder why anyone bothers overcomplicating a cheeseburger.

The double-double—two patties and two slices of cheese—is the order for true devotees.

Add grilled onions and jalapeños if you want a little extra kick. Some regulars swear by the chili cheeseburger, while others go for the bacon cheeseburger. Really, you can’t go wrong.

The Hamburdog, an off-menu secret that’s now officially listed, combines a burger patty and a hot dog with bacon, chili, grilled onions, and jalapeños for those days when you just can’t decide.

Jack’s Famous Fries and More

You absolutely cannot leave Burger House without ordering the fries. Officially called Jack’s Famous Fries, these crispy golden beauties come dusted with that legendary seasoning salt that started it all.

The flavor is hard to pin down—somewhere between salty, peppery, and vaguely smoky with what some guess is a hint of cumin.

Whatever it is, it’s addictive enough that Burger House now sells bottles of the stuff online and in-store for people who need their fix at home.

Beyond the fries, the menu has expanded over the years to include tater tots (also excellent with the seasoning), onion rings, chili cheese fries, and a solid lineup of hot dogs.

Zoe’s Chicken Sandwich Supreme, named for one of the owners’ mothers, has developed its own loyal following—a grilled chicken breast loaded with bacon, grilled onions, and Swiss cheese.

The hand-spun shakes and old-fashioned malts are the real deal, made with actual ice cream.

Get a chocolate malt to wash down your double-double, and you’ll understand why some people have been coming here since childhood.

What to Know Before You Go

All three Burger House locations are open daily, with the original Hillcrest spot closing at 9 PM and the Mockingbird and Addison locations staying open until 10 PM.

The lunch rush can get busy, especially on weekdays when the local work crowd descends.

If you want a more relaxed experience, try hitting them up in the early afternoon or for an early dinner. All locations accept cash, checks, and credit cards these days—no need to worry about finding an ATM.

Where Simplicity Wins

Burger House isn’t trying to reinvent anything. There are no truffle aiolis, no brioche buns, no “artisanal” anything.

What there is, and what there has been for over seven decades, is a thin, perfectly seasoned burger made the same way it was made when Jack Koustabardis first fired up his griddle.

It’s the kind of place where the staff remembers your order, where four generations of the same family might be eating lunch together on a Saturday, and where the food tastes exactly like you remember it from twenty years ago.

That kind of consistency is rare, and Dallas is lucky to have it.
