This Texas Boot Store Offers Destination-Worthy Hospitality

I was getting together with two of my childhood friends for the first time in years, and I wanted to show them a good time. We were going to catch dinner downtown and play an escape room, but I knew a humble storefront that would really be the icing on the cake.

Between the many flavors of the local food hall and dairy-free ice cream down the street, we slipped into the leather-scented luxury of a Tecovas retail store. Here’s why Tecovas is worth a visit, whether you’re in Texas or happen upon a satellite store out-of-state.

Taking Home a Piece of Texas

I was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and one surefire way to spot a tourist there is to see who’s carrying a shopping bag from a Broadway boot store, or, more often, wearing them.

The same is true in many of Texas’s larger cities, such as Austin, Fort Worth, or Dallas. Visitors want to capture some of that legendary cowboy mystique, and wearing a new pair of leather cowboy or cowgirl boots is one way to do just that

Of course, the local residents are just as likely to be sporting their favorite pair of boots, whether work-worn or spit-shined for a night out on the town. That’s what makes buying a pair of cowboy boots in Texas really special—it’s not just a kitschy souvenir but a real piece of Texas culture.

Tecovas, in particular, is a boot brand born in Texas. In 2015, Paul Hedrick wanted to revitalize the western boot industry and make it more accessible for first-time boot buyers while honoring generations-old bootmaking traditions.

He started by selling boots from the trunk of his car at farmers’ markets and fairs. The company grew quickly, and a design team took up residence in Austin’s eastside. Each boot is handmade in the traditional way, requiring over 200 steps from start to finish.

A Big Texas Welcome

From the outside, Tecovas may look like any other boot retailer. Storefront windows hold boots and Western decor. Inside are shelves lined with more boots, wallets, purses, belts, shirts, jeans, and more.

But as my friends soon learned, you’ll be greeted with more than a “howdy” when you step through the doors. Most locations have a “boottender” station, centrally located, where you can grab a local craft beer, shot of bourbon, mixed drink, or non-alcoholic beverage.

I went with the Paloma on my last visit, accepting an ice-cold can. “Is it free?” one of my friends asked. “Yep, every time you visit,” I replied.

Then, we took a seat on a comfy couch to await our turn. The ample seating—couches and leather chairs—is arranged like a living room to make you feel right at home.

I let the staff member know I wanted the Annie in Bone—a tall, almost knee-high boot, this one in cream-colored calfskin leather. She brought out two sizes to help me find the perfect fit.

Tecovas stores also offer a “Free Boot Shine” service every day of the week. Most locations will shine any boots you happen to be wearing, even if they are not Tecovas-branded.

Sometimes, Tecovas stores host special events, such as guest speakers, film screenings, live music, or leather painting workshops.

The personal attention doesn’t end there. Some have treats on hand for your furry friends. You can also get your boots or hats customized with hot-iron branding, make a custom belt buckle, or have a shirt embroidered.

Choosing the Right Fit

A lot of myths and rumors circulate about how to get the right fit for cowboy boots. For example, when my dad was young, he was told he needed to get the smallest pair he could fit his feet into, because the leather would stretch and conform. Those boots never did fit properly.

Other sources said cowboy boots run small, so you should size up.

Boots are an investment, and I wanted to get them right the first time. I’d been perusing the Tecovas selection online. I knew just the boots I wanted, but I wanted to try them on in person first.

When I asked about sizing, the staff member said, “Our boots run fairly true to size, but we do recommend sizing down half a size. What size shoe do you normally wear?”

I told her 8.5, so she brought the Annie in three different sizes—7.5, 8.0, and 8.5. “I want you to feel the difference,” she explained.

I tried on each shoe, feeling a bit like Goldilocks. The 8.5 was clearly too loose. “Your foot would slide up and down, and that could create friction and possibly blisters,” she said.

I tried on the size 8.0. It, too, was looser than I expected for half a size smaller than normal, but snug enough that my foot didn’t slide. “This looks perfect, but try on the 7.5 so you can see the mistake some people make,” she said.

In the 7.5, my toes and heel felt cramped. “It’s true that leather stretches and conforms to the shape of your foot. That’s what makes a well-fitted boot so special. But you don’t have to start with something too tight for that to happen. Leather stretches, but only so far. For you, the 8.0 will quickly mold to the shape of your foot.”

She recommended that I wear thicker socks during the breaking-in period. This would put a bit more pressure on the leather and stretch it faster. I picked up a pair of Tecovas boot socks, which to this day are the most comfortable socks I’ve ever owned.

To my delight, the breaking in of the boots wasn’t painful or pinched. They were pretty comfortable on day one, and soon comfortable enough to walk in all day long. And the new-leather smell lasted for nearly a year.

A Souvenir That Can Last a Lifetime

How many t-shirts, hats, or trinkets have you bought on vacation that ended up in the back of your closet or the donation bin? Or, how long did they last if you really loved and used them? Likely only a few years at most.

Genuine cowboy boots are a type of souvenir that just hits different. There are three main reasons why this is so.

First of all, in over 150 years, cowboy boots have never gone out of style. They were developed following the Civil War, around 1860-1880.

Cowboys needed functional footwear that was comfortable and protected their feet and legs from the rigors of cattle drives. Cowboy boots were a natural outgrowth of military and English riding boots.

The pointed toe made it easier to step into the stirrup to mount a horse. The higher heels of cowboy boots functioned to keep the foot from sliding too far through the stirrup while riding.

In the 1930s, Hollywood westerns caused cowboy boot popularity to surge. No longer just for working men, both men and women began wearing them as a fashion statement.

Look back at John Wayne or Barbara Stanwyck as Annie Oakley. You’ll see that their boots look a lot like what you’ll find today. So, you never have to worry about your Tecovas going out of style.

Secondly, with proper care, leather goods can last much longer than man-made materials. Several years ago, I was given a pair of boots that had already passed through two different wearers. They needed to be conditioned and resoled, and they were good to go.

After about seven years, I’d worn them so much that they needed to be resoled again. Today, I’ve had those leather boots for over 15 years. I’ve had them resoled three times, but the leather upper still looks and feels great.

Finally, Tecovas boots are designed to last a lifetime. Friendly staff will show you how to use a Basic Care Kit or specific products like leather filler, patches, and Leather Cream to polish and maintain your boots.

The company also offers extensive restoration services that can extend the usable lifespan of every pair. You can send in your beloved boots to have them deeply cleaned, conditioned, restitched, and resoled (including outsoles and insoles) through the Tecovas Boots Renewal service.
