This Secret Water Park In Texas Has A Surfing Simulator

Texas isn’t exactly known for its surfing. The Gulf Coast has its moments, but consistent waves? Not quite.

So when you tell someone they can surf year-round in Central Texas—indoors, climate-controlled, no wetsuit required—it sounds too good to be true.

But at Kalahari Resort in Round Rock, the FlowRider surf simulator creates a continuous sheet wave that lets riders bodyboard or stand-up surf regardless of what the weather’s doing outside.

It’s part of America’s largest indoor water park, a 223,000-square-foot aquatic playground that never closes for the season.

From death-defying slides to a tranquil lazy river to that improbable wave machine, Kalahari brings beach-vacation energy to a landlocked suburb about 25 minutes north of downtown Austin.

Kalahari sits on a 350-acre complex in Round Rock, just off U.S. Highway 79 across from Dell Diamond and Old Settlers Park.

The resort is easily accessible from I-35, making it a quick trip from Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, or anywhere in Central Texas.

The resort opened on November 12, 2020, as a $550 million project and Kalahari’s fourth location nationwide, joining properties in Wisconsin Dells, Sandusky (Ohio), and the Pocono Mountains.

The FlowRider is Kalahari’s signature attraction—a surf simulator that pumps approximately 50,000 gallons of water per minute across a smooth, inclined surface to create a continuous wave.

Riders can bodyboard (minimum height 42 inches) or stand-up surf (minimum 52 inches). Unlike ocean surfing, where you catch a wave and ride it until it breaks, the FlowRider’s wave never stops.

You can practice your balance, work on turns, and wipe out as many times as you want without paddling back out.

The beauty of the FlowRider is its accessibility.

Complete beginners can start on a bodyboard, getting the feel of the wave before progressing to standing. Experienced surfers can work on tricks. Lifeguards supervise every session and offer guidance.

Because it’s indoors and climate-controlled, you can surf in December when it’s 40 degrees outside or in August when it’s 105—the water temperature stays consistent year-round.

For anyone who’s dreamed of surfing but lives hundreds of miles from the nearest rideable break, the FlowRider offers something genuinely unique: wave action in the middle of Texas, no ocean required.

The indoor water park stretches across 223,000 square feet with 30 water slides, 20 pools and whirlpools, and enough variety to keep families busy for days.

There are high-speed tube slides for thrill-seekers, family raft rides that accommodate multiple riders, body slides for those who prefer going it alone, and dramatic drop slides for adrenaline junkies.

The wave pool features a 37-foot LED display screen with surround sound, offering interactive video games, trivia, and “dive-in” movie experiences.

The lazy river winds through the park for those who prefer floating to plunging. Coral Cove provides a multi-level water play structure for younger kids, with smaller slides, spray features, and zero-depth entry pools.

Hot tubs and whirlpools dot the landscape for parents who need a break.

Kalahari isn’t just a water park—it’s a full-scale resort designed for multi-day stays.

Tom Foolery’s Adventure Park adds 80,000 square feet of dry-land entertainment: thrill rides, a ropes course, climbing walls, an indoor zip line, bowling, laser tag, escape rooms, and nearly 250 arcade games.
