This Quiet Beach in Texas Is a Fishing Spot and a Dolphin Hideaway
There’s a park that juts out from the mainland, like a narrow strip of land eager to break free from the mainland.
Fulton Beach, in Fulton, Texas, gets you as close to the water and sand as you’ve always wanted to be.
On either side, waves roll in, beaches stretch out, and the horizon opens wide.

You’ll be surprised by what you find here.
There’s fishing, of course. And dolphins leaping up near the pier at night.
Even more, there’s history. And a house you won’t recognize, sitting on a coastal town’s shores.
Fishing Pier
First up, let’s talk about what you’ll find at Fulton Beach when you arrive.
One place to stop is Fulton Beach Park.
Nearby is Fulton Harbor Playground. Let the kids play while you’re surrounded by waves, wind, and sky. It’s a simple, breezy spot where the kids can burn off energy while you soak in the surroundings.
Running along the waterfront is the Fulton Fishing Seawall — a great spot to cast a line and spend an afternoon.

There’s a public parking lot that’s free on Fulton Beach Road, in Rockport, Texas. Parking near the beach is limited, unless you’re using the boat ramp.
The Fulton Fishing Pier is a fun place to stop. You’ll discover live bait for sale, a coffee hut, and several shops.
It’s more than just a pier, so leave some time to explore.
What I love most: dolphins come to play around the pier at night. There’s good lighting, so you can spot these dolphins easily.
You can also watch fish swimming in the water, by the light of the lamps. It’s a fun way to pass the time with kids while you enjoy being out in nature.
People who’ve visited the pier say that it’s a great place to fish at night. Calm, peaceful. Just what you need when summer starts feeling like a to-do list.
It’s also suitable for kids. If you want to teach your kids to fish, this is as good a place as any to start.

One thing I like about the pier is that it’s well-lit. It’s such a challenge finding a city park that has great lights at intervals along hiking trails.
So, if you’re there at night, you’ll have good lighting to find your fishing spot, hang out for a while, and head back home.
There are restrooms available at the pier, too. Don’t worry about staying a while fishing, because you’ll be comfortable.
It’s in a convenient location, near bait stands and restaurants. Not only will you be able to get live bait as you’re fishing, but you’ll also be able to get grub for yourself, your kids, and your fishing buddies.
You won’t have to travel far.
Views are one of the biggest draws of this fishing pier, too. It’s by the water, which shines in the daylight and flashes at night. Listen to the sound of the waves as you wait for the fish to bite.
It can get busy on Thursday afternoons into the evenings. Friday nights and Saturdays all day tend to be busy as well.
Stake out a place to fish, if you’re going on a busy day or time window. Or ask the kind people next to you if they can scooch over and chat a while. You’ll make a friend or two.

It’s relatively new, too — open to the public for only about five years.
It’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Fulton Beach Park is a quiet way to spend a beach day. If you time it right, there are only a handful of other people there with you. That’ll make for a peaceful day to sit, relax, read, or chat.
It’s a great place to go walking. If you want to stroll down the shore, bring your spouse, family, or friends along for the walk.
It’s a small town, so don’t expect the parks, shops, and more of a big beach town like Miami.
That’s part of its appeal. It’s not a big city, but it’s a quiet place to spend a summer vacation.
No one’ll really bother you. Or if you’d like to chat, a local is willing to stop for a bit and laugh about the weather or the latest fish they reeled in.
It’s a South Texas fishing community. Nothing fancy. Just simple living.
Rockport and Fulton share a lot of the same amenities, community, and more. If you’d like to pair the two coastal cities in one whirlwind trip, you can absolutely do so.
It’s easy to walk down to Rockport from Fulton. Or vice versa.
Doing both in one trip gives you more to explore and more shoreline to claim as your own.
Fulton Mansion
I bet you didn’t see this one coming. There’s a mansion on the beach!
Step inside and you’ll find it’s actually a full history museum.

The official name is the Fulton Mansion State Historic Site. If that title made you hesitate, give it a chance anyway.
They offer tours. They have live performances. And … there’s a cafe!
Did you raise your eyebrow? A good sign!
They’re open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. On Sundays, they’re open from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. They’re closed on Mondays.
Those are tight hours, in the middle part of the day. So, be sure to nail down your lunch plans if you’re aiming to make it to visit this mansion/history museum.
The mansion is from 1877. You’ll find yourself stopped in your tracks by the architecture alone.
Especially not in a beach town. In the middle of summer.
It feels like something out of another era — grand and unexpected against the backdrop of salt air and fishing boats.
The museum’s visitors say that it’s a lovely look at local history. There’s restoration work that’s been done inside the mansion, keeping a modern look but preserving a historic past.
Don’t forget to check out the gardens. It’ll feel strange wandering through gardens on what’s supposed to be a beach day in a Texas summer.

But go with the flow. You’ll discover a view you love.
The museum’s guides are one of the highlights, too. They love to give tours and tell travelers about the stories and fun facts of the mansion, the architecture, and local history.
They also have family-friendly activities, such as scavenger hunts. These are fun things to do with your kids, if they’re interested in history.
Saturday is their busiest day, followed by Sunday. Tuesday mornings are surprisingly busy as well. Plan ahead!
The mansion is listed on the Texas Historical Commission’s website, too.
It costs $7 for adults and $4 for kids ages 6-17. That makes it an affordable day-time activity to do with a group of friends or as a family.
There’s a personal side to the mansion’s story as well.
Learn about George Fulton’s engineering skills, or Harriet’s love of flowers for her garden. You’ll leave with a sense of knowing a couple of real people from the past.

I’m Hungry
I hear you! In Fulton, one place to eat by the coast is the Boiling Pot.
The name alone is enough to spark your interest in its menu.
The outside is just as bold as its name. There’s a huge sign that says, “Boiling Pot.” There’s a cauldron, with flames. The letters in the name read like flames increasing in temperature.
It’s not for the faint of heart!

Here, you’ll find Cajun seafood — as much as you can handle, best washed down with a cold glass of water.
They say the inside is like “down-home, beachy digs.” So, if you’re looking for something that’s not too fancy, and doesn’t feel like you’ve left the beach behind, this is the spot for you.
They don’t take reservations, so allow time to wait in line if needed.
There’s outdoor seating, for nice-weather days.
They’re open from 4 p.m. through 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday. On the weekend, their hours are extended: 11 a.m. through 9 p.m.
If you’re not sold on the Boiling Pot, there’s a whole host of restaurants near the beach. If your kids are hungry, check out local seafood joints.
Pier 77 and Moondog Seaside Eatery are both solid options nearby. For something a little more upscale, try the Paradise Key Dockside Bar and Grill.
