This Classic Dallas Diner Has Way More to Offer Than You’d Expect
Diners are a staple of Southern culture. Every Texan plans a road trip with at least one stop at a diner along the way.
Anyone hunting for a classic diner in Dallas needs to know about John’s Cafe. The sign says it all: Just “Good Food.”
Serving up home cooking favorites, such as chicken fried steak, french toast, pancakes, and biscuits and eggs, this cafe has it all.

The decor takes you back to a simpler time, with maroon booths, newspaper clippings on the walls, and a cheery John behind the counter to take your order and chat.
John’s family works diligently in the kitchen behind him, as he tells you about his Greek heritage. Even the coffee cups show it — half Greek flag, half Texas flag.
What foods do they have? White letters on the diner’s windows sum it up: Breakfast Special, Lunch, Burgers, and More.
If you’d like breakfast or lunch (or a brunch in between) on the road, this stop may be for you.

What’s on the menu, John?
Glad you asked! An American diner may have you hankering for a stack of pancakes, eggs and a cup of coffee, or even a burger and fries merrily paired with ketchup.
There’s much more than just a few menu items at John’s Cafe. Set aside at least $10-20 (or more) for each person’s meal at the diner. You’ll have your pick of options!
Before your stomach starts growling, let’s make sure you’re visiting on the right day and at the right time.

John’s Cafe is open 7 AM to 2 PM Tuesdays through Saturdays. They’re closed on Mondays, so be sure to check your calendar for what days you’re passing through.
How about Sundays? They’re open an hour later, at 8 AM, but close at the usual time, 2 PM.
They’re often very busy in the mid-mornings, and Friday and Saturday mornings are some of their busiest times (prime breakfast and brunch times!).

As a family business, they do sometimes go on family travel or vacations, such as in the summer, check their Facebook page for the latest updates on hours and closures.
They’re actually really good about posting any updates to hours in their main page’s feed on Facebook. Most of their posts are focused on keeping customers in the loop on closures.
Facebook is also where you’ll find their contact info, to ask about menu items, allergies, specials, and more.
They’re also reachable via Facebook Messenger for any questions, concerns, or comments.

There’s a phone number, if you’re on the go, and an email address, if you’d like to plan a birthday party or anniversary celebration, or ask a question for an upcoming date or trip.
Not many diners make their email this easy to find — use it if you’re planning ahead.
As you’re planning ahead, you may want to also leave room in your belly for a hearty meal.
John’s Cafe has a classics section on their menu just for you: Texas Sized Breakfast. Of course, there’s a Chicken Fried Steak and Chicken Fried Chicken (in the $15 range), both doused in gravy.
That’s a taste of home, right there.

If you love pork chops, there’s a Pork Chop Breakfast, with 3 eggs. Or if you like hamburger steak, with brown gravy, grilled onions, and eggs, there’s a Hamburger Steak Breakfast for you.
Craving corn beef hash? There’s a Texas Sized Breakfast for you, too. Check out the Corn Beef Hash with 3 Eggs Any Style, for a mix of foods you may like.
Just trying to get your group fed? Somehow, someway? John’s Cafe has a Breakfast for 5 (in the $80 range), that could save your morning (and long car rides).
Order this, and you’ll get a protein (ham, bacon, or sausage), a side (hash browns or potatoes), and a bread (pancakes, waffles, French toast, biscuits, or regular toast), in a serving size for 5 people.

If your kids stop counting skyscrapers, and start saying, “Are we there yet?”, it may be time to make a pit stop at John’s Cafe.
The diner has a kid’s menu for both breakfast and lunch. Their breakfast menu ($8-10 range) features what many kids love, first thing in the morning: pancakes, bacon, hash browns, and French toast.
Maybe your kid has a favorite they naturally gravitate towards. (Or that they’d more willingly snarf, without coaxing to eat something.)
Avoid an argument in the backseat, by picking between three different options from the kid’s breakfast menu. Every kid can get their own mix-and-match, from the menu, that they like best.

The kid’s lunch menu has a good variety of choices, too. It’s perfect for the kid who may not jump at the chance to try something new, or that looks “weird.” They’ve got what they need, right here.
For lunch, kids can have some of the classic “kid” favorites, including chicken fingers, fries (of course), hamburgers, or grilled cheese sandwiches.
Some restaurants have just one or two kid’s options, maybe chicken fingers, or hamburgers. But it’s nice to have several choices, at John’s Cafe, so your kid can find what they may like (“I had a hamburger yesterday.”).
It also frees up parents and other adults, to have kid’s options for breakfast and lunch. You’re not spending time worrying, looking at a long menu, about what your kid may or may not eat from “adult” food options.
Now’s your time to treat yourself. What would you and your party like best for breakfast? Are you a breakfast foods person? If so, this is the place for you.
There are pancakes and waffles, galore.
Of course, you can splurge on a Texas Waffle and Chicken Fingers (in the $15 range), a popular choice these days. There’s something about a waffle and its syrup, and biting into a chicken finger, that’s so satisfying.
Another option is to go with the classic Texas French toast, if that’s your favorite breakfast choice, or a plain waffle or pancake or two (with syrup).
Don’t let the pancake vs. waffle debate divide the group — luckily, everyone can order their own. Each person can choose a waffle or pancake (or stack) to meet with their allegiances.

Anything New, John?
If you’re tired of the same old breakfast, there are plenty of ways to mix things up.
One way (you guessed it!) is through toppings and flavors. At John’s Cafe, you can get a Pecan Waffle, or Pecan Pancakes.
Just be careful: If you’re allergic to nuts (or cross-contamination), or anyone in your group is, be sure to check with the diner’s staff members before you order (or better yet, call ahead).
You can get a stack of Nutella Banana Pancakes, if that’s your sweet spot. Or you can opt for a Strawberry Banana Waffle, Strawberry Banana French Toast, or Strawberry Banana Pancakes.
Hint: These menu items with flavors and toppings can be a good way to make a visit special for one of the members of your party, such as a birthday, anniversary, or a celebration you’d like to have (or are secretly planning) at John’s Cafe.

How about drinks? I’m parched! John’s Cafe has several options, including a few you may be pleasantly surprised by.
The diner has Coke products, for soft drinks, including Coke, Diet Coke, Dr. Pepper (when in Texas!), Diet Dr. Pepper, and Sprite.
Your kid may enjoy the fruit juice, available in apple, orange, or cranberry (some kids mix them!). Or they may like to sip some milk (chocolate or regular).
Here’s where it gets fun. John’s Cafe also carries Mexican Coke, Orange Fanta, and Sprite — and if you’ve never had a Mexican Coke, that alone is worth the stop.
No drinks rundown would be complete without mentioning John’s signature item.. What’s that? Why, it’s John’s iced mocha coffee (in the $8 range). Enjoy it, and give John a word of compliment on the way out.
Not only Mexican drinks, but John’s Cafe also has Breakfast Mexican Specialties on their menu.

Dig into Huevos Rancheros (eggs, beans, rice, potatoes), The Best Migas (eggs, tortilla strips, chorizo, jalapeno), or Caliente Burrito (steak, chorizo, jalapeno).
Want more? Check out the Mexican Breakfast Nachos (chips, beans, sour cream, eggs), Meat Lover’s Burrito (eggs, bacon, sausage, ham), or Taco Breakfast (eggs, beans, flour tortillas).
Or go for a tried-and-true option, John’s Machaca (eggs, steak, onions, pinto beans, toast).
Watching what you eat? No sweat. There’s a variety of options for you to make a healthy breakfast on the go, at John’s Cafe.
In the Light Breakfast section, the diner has a Breakfast Sandwich (fried egg, sausage, toast), a Light Breakfast (egg whites, potatoes, toast), or a Fruit Combo (eggs, choice of meat, cup of fruit).
More into eggs for breakfast? You can get 1 Egg Any Style, or 2 Eggs Any Style with Grits or Oatmeal.
Or if avocado is your thing, there’s an Avocado Toast with Fruit or Avocado Toast with Smoked Salmon and Fruit.
Did salmon pique your interest? Smoked salmon at breakfast might sound unexpected, but John’s Cafe pulls it off with the New Yorker Breakfast (in the $12 range) — and at that price, it’s pretty reasonable.
Just want breakfast combos? You can get the Hungry Man’s Breakfast Combo (in the $15 range, which may be good value for the price) (eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes, potatoes), a New Yorker Eggs Benedict Combo, or Canadian-style bacon in an Eggs Benedict Combo.
Or you can choose a Meat Lover Skillet Combo or Breakfast Burrito Combo, or get a combo of any eggs, waffles, pancakes, or French toast.
Ready to dig into an omelette right about now? John’s Cafe does have a build your own omelette option on their menu. And on top of that, they offer 10 different omelette choices.

Not just a breakfast stop for your party, John’s Cafe is replete with lunch specials and menu items (in the $10-15 range), including salads, deli sandwiches, hamburgers, lunch platters, Mexican plates, and a whole host of sides.
Okay, but how flexible are their pickup and delivery options? John’s Cafe has dine-in, a couple outdoor seating spots, an in-store pickup, and Favor delivery.
Parking is pretty limited, since it’s a small diner in a string of other stores. There’s parking in front of the diner, and across a small parking lot.
Visit their Facebook page or Instagram for the latest hours and updates, message them or give them a call to plan ahead, and use this map to find your way to the diner where simple, honest food never goes out of style.

Where: 1733 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75206
While diners like John’s Cafe are a staple of Texans’ roads, there’s a wide variety of menu items, experiences, flavors, and smells at this diner, in particular.
You may discover you love the mix of a few foods you hadn’t thought to put together before. Or you may have a gut-feeling sense of home, as you bite into the food of your childhood.
Remember to lean on the counter at the end of your meal, laughing as John tells you about his garden and the fresh food he grows. Let him know how much you enjoyed the simpler time he gave you, for just an hour or two.
