This Countryside Haven in Texas is a Springtime Miracle
Have you seen those vibrant blue, intricately bell-shaped petal creations growing all over the state?
The Blue Bonnet is the official state flower of Texas, and for good reason.
Each one is curated like a miracle. And when you see them as an entire population? Blanketing a field? It’s an overwhelming sense of awe.

There’s a town in Texas called Ennis, that has been celebrating these little miracles for many years and many years to come.
The town is only 35 miles south of Dallas. That’s about half an hour’s drive from the airport. Talk about a post-flight revival plan.
Every spring, typically from late March through April, Ennis paints itself blue for spectators who come from across the nation to witness its bloom.

Luckily, for Ennis, its town council hasn’t given way to heavy modernization.
The roads lacing through the streets of the county are old-fashioned and dusty.
The flowers decorate the countryside, the sun shines upon this corner of Texas, as God himself intended.
Where do you think all those country songs come from?
The preservation is working for Ennis too. Tourists still flock to this landscape for a much-needed break from the fast pace of wherever they’re from.
Turns out leaving things be, can be monetization in itself.

Ennis ain’t no fool about it either. The town knows what you’re coming for and what you want.
Something that makes Ennis so special is that they’ve already got all the things you want to see mapped out.
The city distributes detailed maps showing exactly where to go to witness Ennis’s beauty. The town visitor center hands out written instructions on where to spectate the spring bloom most effectively.
Something about holding a physical treasure map in your hand and actually getting to follow it to a wildflower land of your dreams, is so delicately childlike. Almost otherworldly, as if you’re 12 again, playing a game of fairies with your sisters.
These aren’t curated gardens for your satisfaction. These are wildflowers, blooming as they may- and boy, can you feel it.
Some of the marked spectator spots on the map lead you to a forgotten cottage, in the middle of the countryside, surrounded by quilts of colored flowers.

Some lead you to meadows along a hillside, where the blue bonnets coexist with many other species of wildflowers, gifting you a magical array of colors to glimpse upon.
Being given access to a world so colorful, revives the children in all of us. For that reason alone, a trip to Ennis in the springtime is a must.
The most magical part of being invited to the blue bonnet’s first party of the year, is that they require a unique set of circumstances to bloom at this capacity.
They demand a perfect combination of rainfall, temperature, and soil conditions to flourish in this way.
In Ennis, you get to witness one of the many miracles of nature.
This year will be the 74th annual celebration, don’t miss it.

Here an evening can be spent in luxury, enjoying a stroll, feeding the ducks, and having a picnic with your loved ones. There’s plenty of space to choose from, as the parks cover over 177.63 acres of land. Every single one of these parks fully blooms during the spring, so you cannot go wrong.
Here are some options to choose from:
Bluebonnet Park. This 47-acre park includes 8 lighted ball fields, 2 concession stands and 2 restroom facilities, 10 acres of recreational space, a 2-acre fishing lake, a walking path that’s just short of a mile, and a covered pavilion.
This park is designed for softball & baseball leagues from across the State of Texas. So if you’ve got a young baller, be sure to visit this park.
Lions Park. This 18-acre park also includes a fishing lake, a covered pavilion, a playground, and a walking path that goes around the lake. Sounds like the perfect recipe for a pleasant Sunday afternoon to me.

Veterans Memorial Park. This 19-acre park was built as a tribute to local war veterans. It includes 9 soccer fields, a concession stand, picnic space, a walking path, and even a playground, for the children.

This brings us back to the ever-so-lovely: Ennis Bluebonnet Trails. Come find out exactly why this town is known as “The Official Bluebonnet City and Trail of Texas.
Lake Bardwell is another breathtaking location to view the wildflower display. Flowers always seem to bloom the strongest when they’re encircle a lake.
Encompassing over 3,500 acres, it is one of the largest attractions in Ellis County The lake itself offers water skiing, fishing, swimming, boating, and whatever else you can think of, really. My personal favorite activity here is to picnic among the bluebonnet fields.
The Highview Marina rents paddle boats, if you’d like to have an interactive day on the water with your family. You can even camp on the 1,800 acres surrounding the lake. The 5 parks encompassing the space are maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

With all that this lovely town has to offer, it’s no wonder they see so much traffic from tourism each year. Ennis is simply too wonderful a place to skip.
