Discover Texas’s Most Inclusive Secret Water Park Built For Everyone

Most water parks blur together after a while—same slides, same lazy rivers, same fight for lounge chairs.

Morgan’s Inspiration Island in San Antonio breaks that mold completely.

Built from the ground up to welcome guests of all physical and cognitive abilities, it is the world’s first ultra-accessible splash park.

Waterproof wheelchairs, warm-water splash pads, and thoughtful design mean that everyone can play together without barriers.

Here is the story behind this groundbreaking park and why it has drawn visitors from all 50 states and over 100 countries.

Morgan’s Inspiration Island sits beside Morgan’s Wonderland on a 25‑acre campus in northeast San Antonio.

Located at 5223 David Edwards Drive, near Wurzbach Parkway and Thousand Oaks Drive, the tropical‑themed water park opened on June 17, 2017.

It expanded the vision of the theme park next door, which had already proven that inclusive recreation could thrive.

Together, the two parks transformed the former Longhorn Quarry into what founder Gordon Hartman calls an “oasis of inclusion.”

Morgan’s Wonderland opened in 2010 as the world’s first ultra‑accessible theme park. Seven years later, Morgan’s Inspiration Island added water to the formula of inclusion.

The Water Park Experience

Morgan’s Inspiration Island cost $17 million to build and features five tropically-themed splash pads plus a River Boat Adventure ride.

Unlike traditional water parks with deep pools and climbing structures, Inspiration Island relies on splash pads.

Geysers, water cannons, rain curtains, and tipping buckets create play spaces anyone can enjoy, regardless of mobility.

Rainbow Reef greets visitors with a giant octopus and spraying seahorses, its water warmed for guests sensitive to cold.

Hang 10 Harbor delivers a surf theme with a continuous twenty‑foot wave. Shipwreck Island features a pirate ship, a massive tipping bucket, and a ramp‑accessible double slide.

Harvey’s Hideaway Bay offers a jungle treehouse, while Calypso Cove adds a music garden with rain curtain effects.

The River Boat Adventure completes the experience. It provides a five‑minute ride through a simulated jungle, engineered so the seating rises to meet passengers instead of requiring ramps.

Every detail reflects the park’s mission: water play designed so everyone can join in.

The biggest challenge in building an accessible water park was clear: battery‑powered wheelchairs can’t get wet.

Morgan’s Inspiration Island solved this by partnering with the University of Pittsburgh Human Engineering Research Laboratories to create the PneuChair, a waterproof wheelchair powered by compressed air.

It weighs only eighty pounds, recharges in ten minutes, and was so rare at launch that all ten existing models were at the park.

Guests can use three types of waterproof wheelchairs free of charge—the PneuChair for independent users, a manual version, and a push‑stroller for caregiver assistance.

Accessibility extends beyond the rides. Seven changing rooms allow private transfers, with two equipped with Hoyer lifts for mechanical assistance.

The park even provides waterproof bags for ventilators and O2 water‑collar covers for guests with tracheostomies. Every detail reflects the mission: no one is left out of the fun.

Morgan’s Inspiration Island operates seasonally, typically opening in mid-May and closing at the end of September.

Capacity is limited to maintain an uncrowded atmosphere comfortable for sensory-sensitive guests, so purchasing tickets online in advance is strongly recommended.

Admission includes access to all five splash pads and the River Boat Adventure ride. Guests with special needs and children under two are admitted free, no questions asked—the park takes people on trust.

For visitors without special needs, dual admission tickets covering both Morgan’s Wonderland and Inspiration Island run approximately $34 per person.

Outside food is not permitted in Morgan’s Inspiration Island, though picnics are welcome at Morgan’s Wonderland next door. Cabanas and lockers are available for additional fees.
