Canyon walls layered in different colors. Stunning views for miles.

Welcome to Santa Elena Canyon in the Lone Star State’s Big Bend National Park.

This summer, Santa Elena Canyon is waiting to show you some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Southwest.

Enjoy views of canyon walls as you paddle.
Cliffs to rival The Princess Bride. Rapids rushing by.

Adventure beckons in Santa Elena Canyon.

Downstream

The National Park Service manages Santa Elena Canyon, part of the larger Big Bend National Park system.

Paddling downstream through this canyon is one of the park’s most popular overnight or multi-day trips.

Part of this is because of the put-in and take-out, easily accessible by car.

Another part is that this canyon is thought of as one of the most beautiful sites to visit.

I think what I like most are the towering cliffs in Santa Elena. These cliffs, forming the canyon’s walls, rise up to 1,500 feet high!

The first 13 miles from the put-in at Lajitas treat you to unique views of the riparian and desert ecosystem, contrasting one another.

Soak up peaceful moments on the river. (Photo credit: Trip Advisor)

Those first miles aren’t too rigorous. They meander. It’s more of a relaxing ride.

The next 7 miles get technical once you enter the canyon proper. Be prepared to use those skills you’ve worked hard to get.

Two miles into the canyon, you’ll encounter the largest rapids at Santa Elena. They’re called the Rock Slide — and the name says it all. You’ve been warned.

The Rock Slide is classified as Class IV rapids at some water levels. Know what to expect before you launch.

If the water levels are 300 to 600 CFS, that’s perfectly fine for open boats. Anything above 600 CFS is only okay for rafts. Beginners shouldn’t go out when the rapids are above 600 CFS. Take care of yourself and others.

Note that a backcountry permit is required for all overnight river trips. Be prepared!

The National Park Service offers a handy resource on their website: a River Guide to the Rio Grande covering the Colorado and Santa Elena Canyons.

It’s available through the National Park Service’s online store.

Views of the canyon’s walls are stunning. (Photo credit: Trip Advisor)

It’s a full-color, laminated trip log of sorts that you can use as you plan a trip this summer.

Inside you’ll find detailed maps of the route, along with historical context and natural history notes.

For anyone who likes to have a map handy, as well as fun facts about what you’ll find or experience, grab a copy of this river guide.

It covers everything from the Tapado Canyon to the Santa Elena Canyon take-out, and it includes specific notes about the Colorado Canyon and the Santa Elena Canyon.

You can buy it through the Big Bend Natural History Association online store.

There are quite a few river guides in the Big Bend Natural History Association’s online store, so look for the one that says “Santa Elena Canyon.” That’s the one!

It costs $17.95 (listing price). They have a lot of these river guides in stock, more than 1,000 copies, so you should be able to get a copy, no problem.

The guide is designed for anyone who’d like to plan a multi-day float trip through a canyon like the Santa Elena Canyon.

You’ll find information about launching near Lajitas and other put-ins and how to navigate your way through dramatic 1,500-feet-deep cliffs.

There’s a mix of calm paddling and technical rapids information, including the Class IV Rock Slide.

The landscape unfolds before you. (Photo credit: Trip Advisor)

The guide also includes insights into the historical context, geology, and navigation of the canyon, which makes it challenging but also rewarding as you traverse this canyon along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Keep in mind that permits are required for the trip. And always be aware of ideal water flow rates between 300-600 CFS for a great summer trip.

The guide gives you not only detailed maps, but also campsite information and critical safety tips you’ll need as you’re planning ahead.

Relax along this peaceful part of the river. (Photo credit: Trip Advisor)

What’s cool is that the river guide also features moments in history of the first river trip to survey the Rio Grande in 1852. If you’re a history buff, check out these historical snippets in the river guide.

Upstream

It’s fun to explore Santa Elena going upstream, too.

You can have a lovely day trip by paddling upstream, from the Santa Elena Canyon Trailhead. This trailhead is a few miles inside the canyon.

You’d return back downstream (known as a boomerang trip).

This trip should only be taken when flow rates are under 200 CFS. Really, 100 CFS is more ideal. Be careful, and don’t take any unnecessary risks to yourself or others.

If it’s below 100 CFS, the water may be too shallow to paddle and you may end up dragging your boat through sections of the river.

You can check the current CFS rates on the National Park Service’s website. Know before you go!

A lower water level means a gentler current, making the upstream paddle more manageable and relaxing.

The big-picture views are even better. (Photo credit: Trip Advisor)

If you’d rather skip the shuttle fee, this is a great trip to plan with just one vehicle — no return logistics needed.

Note that you’ll need a backcountry permit for any river trips you take.

Day-use trips are free, which makes it a nice, free activity to do this summer.

Planning Tips

One of the most amazing sights to experience at this canyon is the Santa Elena Canyon Overlook.

It’s a great spot to pause and enjoy the landscape around you.

Santa Elena Canyon is 8 miles long and 1,500 feet deep. In some spots, the canyon’s walls are only 30 feet wide.

I love when the canyon walls seem to encroach on you, as you wind your way through. (Photo credit: Trip Advisor)

Many people like to go on two- or three-day river rafting trips through Santa Elena, starting out in the town of Lajitas. Note that this town is actually outside of Big Bend National Park.

Last summer, part of the route at Santa Elena was closed due to flooding. Always check the proper channels and websites to make sure the route is fully operational and accessible.

Big Bend National Park has some fees it charges, so be aware of any extra fees you’ll need to pay.

Don’t forget to look up as you’re making your way along the river. (Photo credit: Trip Advisor)

Hikers like to go on the Santa Elena Canyon Trail. It’s 1.7 miles long, and it’ll take you about half an hour to an hour to hike.

It’s an out-and-back trail, meaning you return the same way you came. The elevation gain is 232 feet, so keep that in mind as you plan your hike.

This trail starts at the end of the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. This is a paved parking area.

Though this trail is not very long, it’s one of the most scenic hikes.

Take a moment or two to notice the plants on your travels. (Photo credit: Trip Advisor)

After crossing Terlingua Creek, the trail climbs through several short switchbacks before gradually descending along the banks of the Rio Grande.

I can’t pass up a view of the river as I’m hiking. There’s something so peaceful about its sound.

You’ll be surrounded by riparian vegetation and deep cliffs of solid limestone.

The trail will drop you off where the canyon walls meet the river. Stop there for lunch, and look around at the views.

Be aware that Terlingua Creek can be impassable after heavy rains, flash floods, or any high water. The trail is closed during those times to keep everyone safe and well.

For many travelers, the Santa Elena Canyon is a popular natural feature to go explore in Big Bend National Park.

Its short nature trail winds into shady depths beneath towering cliff shadows, with the sound of the rushing river below.

Looking out into the distance is one of my favorite things to do on a summer trip. (Photo credit: Trip Advisor)

It’s 8 miles west of Castolon, and it’s accessible by either Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive or Old Maverick Road.

Note that the trail climbs up several flights of ramps and stairs, so make sure you’re prepared for that type of hike.

Many people love to see the canyon not through hiking, but by raft or canoe. Local outfitters even offer trip packages anywhere from 1 to 3 days when conditions are good.

Some river runners who have intermediate or advanced skills go on their own, through the canyon’s waters.

You’ll have opportunities to spot wildlife, hike in shady side canyons (a fun discovery!), and camp on spacious sandbars.

There are a couple of rapids, including the Rock Slide, so watch out for those. Even if you have intermediate or advanced skills, be careful on the rapids.

Check current conditions, talk to a local outfitter, and consider buying a guidebook before you head out.

Heading off into the wilderness this summer is exciting. But you also need a good plan to make the most out of your trip.

The Santa Elena Canyon borders the western edge of Big Bend National Park. There’s plenty to explore and discover about Big Bend, while you’re also contemplating a trip to Santa Elena.

Don’t forget to check out all the different types of adventures West Texas holds in store for you this summer.

Where: Big Bend National Park

Find them online at nps.gov/bibe and pull up directions on Google Maps before you head out — because canyon walls 1,500 feet deep and Class IV rapids deserve a well-planned summer adventure.

Imagine setting up camp in an open, wooded area, at the bottom of a huge mountain basin.

You’ve now entered Chisos Basin Campground in Big Bend National Park.

Many people know about Big Bend and have it on their bucket list of places to visit as a couple, a family, or a group of friends.

Get to your campsite, and set up everything so it feels like home. (Photo credit: Chisos Basin Campground)

It’s one of those destinations that keeps showing up on the short list when you’re deciding where to go next.

For those who love camping, there’s a way to combine that lifestyle with the scenic views of Big Bend.

I Want a Big-Picture Overview

In the Chisos Basin Campground, campers enjoy views of Casa Grande and Emory Peak.

The best highlight for many campers is watching sunsets through a nearby “window” into Big Bend.

Beyond the views, campers have access to some of Big Bend’s most popular trails not too far from the campground.

If you like to track elevation, this campground is at 5,400 feet.

When’s it available? It’s open year-round to campers, though there are a couple construction projects that, while delayed, will start later this year or next year, to make improvements to Chisos Basin facilities, lodges, and so on.

Reservations are required at the campground. They don’t have first-come, first-served camping.

If you prefer spontaneous travel, just be sure to plan ahead — reservations are required, so jot down the dates you want before they’re gone.

Pack food for a picnic in the open-air. (Photo credit: Chisos Basin Campground)

If you like to plan your reservations, or map out stops along a longer road trip, this is a good campground for you.

Wood fires and ground fires aren’t allowed anywhere in the park, though, so don’t plan on starting up any fires while you’re camping in Chisos Basin.

A charcoal fire in an above-ground grill is allowed. Just make sure you dispose properly of your ashes. Liquid-fuel stoves are also permitted.

It isn’t recommended to bring any trailers that exceed 20 feet or RVs that are more than 24 feet, because of the narrow, curving road that goes into Chisos Basin, as well as the tiny, unlevel campsites at the campground.

So, what are my options? Chisos Basin has a separate Tent Campground, with 7 tent campsites for groups of 9-20 people.

It’s tent camping only, though. No RVs are permitted in the Tent Campground. Note that you’d have to have at least 9 people to reserve one of these group sites.

Okay, Now I’d Like Details

Here’s everything you need to know.

There are 56 total sites at the Chisos Basin Campground. Amenities matter, especially for RVers, so let’s break them down.

There’s nothing like the view at the top. (Photo credit: Jarod Wilson)

The campground has cell phone reception, year-round, though be aware that you’re entering a basin within the larger Big Bend National Park (a little remote).

There’s a year-round camp store — always a welcome convenience for restocking snacks, supplies, or picking up a souvenir.

They do have an amphitheater that’s open year-round, but you’d need to check with them closer to when you’re coming to find out what’s playing at the amphitheater or to get a schedule of events.

There isn’t any internet connectivity, so plan ahead for not having that.

The campground sells ice year-round, so you won’t need to bring your own ice bags in your RV. Firewood isn’t available on site or for sale.

Enjoy the views, as you sit and relax. (Photo credit: Chisos Basin Campground)

Laundry isn’t available at the campground. There are food storage lockers that you can use anytime during the year.

They have a dump station and a trash and recycling collection area that are year-round. The campground has potable water, and there are staff members on site during the whole year.

No showers! Keep that in mind when you book the dates you’ll be at the campground.

Portable toilets are seasonal, but flush toilets are available year-round.

The campground is open 24 hours a day, the whole year.

Fees? Campsite fees are per night. You can’t have more than 8 people and 2 vehicles at a campsite. If you have more than 8 people at a campsite, you have to move to and pay for additional campsites.

There’s so much to see if you just look up! (Photo credit: Chisos Basin Campground)

You can only have one RV per site, with two vehicles and a tent, four tents and two passenger vehicles, or four motorcycles. Note that the smaller sites won’t even fit 8 people or multiple tents or vehicles.

Reservations are made through Recreation.gov. It’s $16 per campsite per night.

Note that park entrance fees aren’t included in the campground fees. You’ll need to get an entrance pass to go into the park and to stay in the campground.

Be aware that there aren’t many places where a large RV can turn around easily within the entire Chisos Basin area. We know you’re a pro at turning around, backing up, and fitting into spots neatly. But don’t risk it!

What’s the policy about visitors? Visitors can stay in the campground no more than 14 consecutive nights. There’s a limit of 28 nights in a calendar year.

Of course, during their busiest time of year from January 1 through April 15, visitors are limited to 14 total nights in the campground.

Can you bring pets? Yes, you can bring pets to this campground, but they must be on a leash at all times. Your leash must be 6 feet or less in length. Don’t leave your pet alone, and you can’t take them on any trails.

As you can imagine, especially if you’re a seasoned RVer or camper, it’s best to store all of your food items inside a vehicle or in an animal-proof food storage locker. Keep yourself and others safe!

Generators are permitted in specific sites and can only run from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. every day.

It’s amazing how vast the landscape is in the basin. (Photo credit: Chisos Basin Campground)

All vehicles, including trailers and motorcycles, need to stay on paved or designated areas. Don’t park your vehicle on any grass or behind rocks and so on. No digging is allowed at campsites, either.

If you’re somewhat new to camping or the RV life, keep in mind that animals think of toothpaste, soap, deodorant, and trash as food. Stow those!

The campground’s quiet hours are from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Respect your neighbors!

The wind can get quite gusty in the bottom of the mountain basin. Make sure your tent(s) and other items are properly secured.

Make sure you’re up to speed on the map and where everything is you’ll need. (Photo credit: Chisos Basin Campground)

Two-thirds of the campsites are able to be reserved up to 6 months in advance. A third of the campsites can be reserved up to 14 days in advance. Pick what works best for your road trip schedule and the stops you’ll make along the way.

There’s one ADA campsite (site #37), with a paved walkway and an accessible picnic table and grill. It’s right next to a water spigot and a public restroom that’s accessible.

In terms of wheelchair access, the campsites are unlevel. The campground itself is pretty hilly, too, but there are paved roads that connect the campsite parking areas and the restrooms.

The campground is considered a developed campground. But be aware that there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups at the campsites.

Things to Do Near the Campground

The national park got its name from a curve in the Rio Grande called a “big bend.” Stretching more than a thousand miles, the river is an international boundary between the United States and Mexico.

You’ll be part of this larger story, camping right in the heart of it all.

The campground’s at the base of several cliffs in the middle of a bunch of shrubland. You’ll discover lots of desert plants, such as Arizona cypress and mesquite trees. Maple, aspen, pinyon, and ponderosa pines dot the landscape at higher elevations up from the campground.

Teach your kids about the different plants and trees they’ll find here in Big Bend. Lessons in nature!

One of the benefits of the campground’s location is that it’s at a higher elevation than the other campgrounds within Big Bend. In summer, it’s cooler here. In winter, temperatures here can be cooler than the lower desert floor, so pack accordingly.

What’s better than watching the sun light up the mountains around you? (Photo credit: Amanda H)

Did you know the Chisos Mountains are a favorite nesting spot for migratory birds? That’s right!

The mountains are actually one of the only nesting grounds in the United States for the Colima warbler, which shows up in mid-April and heads out for Mexico by mid-September.

The Chisos Basin Campground is a popular spot for hikers. A lot of Big Bend’s Day Hike trails are close by, including the Lost Mine Trail, Window Trail, South Rim Trail, and Pinnacles Trail.

Several of these trailheads are just about a mile down the basin road from the campground.

Love the river? Campers are about 30 miles away from access to the river, where you can canoe, kayak, fish, or sit and enjoy the view.

Hike one of the nearby trails for great views with a group of friends.
The campground offers some guided interpretive walks or even evening programs. These are seasonal and subject to change. Be sure to check their website and call ahead if there’s a program, walk, or tour you’d really like to take.

How do we get to the campground? Plug Chisos Basin Campground into your Maps app.

Where: Chisos Basin Campground, Window View Drive, Big Bend National Park, Texas 79834

Whether you’re relaxing in the wooded area at the bottom of the basin, looking up, or intent on your hiking boots and your footing as you take on one of the many trails of Big Bend, Chisos Basin Campground has everything it takes to become your family’s go-to vacation destination.

The sun turns the mountains different shades of pink and orange.
Let your shoulders relax, as the sun sets behind mountains you’d had on your bucket list for so long. Wrap your hand around a cool drink, the cold of the glass biting into your palm. You don’t mind.

Hueco Tanks is a hard one to sum up in only so many words, as the site has over 10,000 years of human history.

In present-day Hueco Tanks, you can hike, rock climb, camp, bird watch, study nature, history, and even picnic or stargaze. The outdoor recreation activities are endless at this park, as well as the rich history.

Red desert sand outside of the park.
Hueco Tanks originally earned its name from the holes that appear to have been scooped out of the rocks. These holes were exposed due to continuous erosion. These scoops became known as “huecos” which is the Spanish word for “hollows”.

The huecos have always played a vital role in the historic significance of this site, as they collect rainwater. Thus they provide a desert oasis, time and time again.

Example of a Hueco collecting rainwater.
This site has always been a crucial stop for travelers, hunters, and gatherers in the arid Chihuahuan Desert.

An example of a Hueco carved out of the rock. Photo Credit: Madeleine Gardner

To the present day, Hueco remains an essential and ceremonial site to many modern tribes, including the Kiowa, Mescalero Apache, and Tigua.

Due to its prosperous history, access to the public is strictly regulated. Most areas require guided tours to protect the fragility of the land.

Detailed pictographs, Hueco.
Present-day descendants still actively perform religious ceremonies on the site. This continues to honor thousands of years of uninterrupted tradition.

One of the major ancestral beliefs remaining strong to this day is the vitality of the huecos. They are viewed as a miraculous gift and meant to be honored.

The rain itself is also meant to be honored, as it is in most places that are so barren. Themed offerings are often given to the land as gratitude..

Even the most typical rock-climbing van-dwellers, who the site attracts, are asked to adhere to this level of respect, no matter how casual the visit.

Climbing crew in Hueco. Video Credit: Madeleine Gardner

Like all climbing areas made of sandstone, it’s considered unethical to climb on the rock until 24 hours after any rain event. Locals are very strict about this so use your judgment wisely.

Painted Prayers to the Rain Gods, Petroglyphs.
It is the site in the general area, where prehistoric and historic records exist simultaneously.

Additionally, it’s a major destination for modern adventure-seekers and rock enthusiasts.

A famous climb called Butter Pumper, rated v10.
The massive huecos provide a more dynamic climbing style and three-dimensional movement. This attracts a surprisingly athletic and youthful crowd to the ancient site. This is impactful, as the history of Hueco Tanks is continuing to be developed, to our present day.

How historians picture Hueco being previously occupied.
Between 1000 and 1300 AD, many groups lived among the rock hills. This time period is referred to as the Doña Ana phase. Fresh soil was targeted for vegetation and a trail was clearly created in ancient times, leading towards water and salt access. The area was used by Spanish explorers and travelers on the Butterfield Overland Mail route.

Butterfield Overland Mail route. Photo Credit: National Park Travelling

That trail continued to remain in use through the Gold Rush era, the cattle driving era, and has always been utilized by military officials.

Assumed depiction of what it looked like to travel the Butterfield Overland Route through Hueco.
The turn off to Hueco is only about 25 miles east of El Paso. There are only two ways to get there from the city, so be careful not to miss it.

There is a minimum of $150/guide a day required to explore the park. Once reservations are made, it’s heavily advised to obtain a TSSP, Texas State Parks Pass. One pass can cover a whole group entering in one vehicle.

The park is very heavily trafficked nowadays, as it has become quite famous. The park permits 10 visitors each morning to come in without a reservation. So if you fancy camping out early to get that worm and avoid the 100$ reservation fees, this could be an option for you.

The Hueco Rock Ranch is an amazing option as far as accommodation goes, as long as you don’t have any dogs accompanying you. The ranch has a middle-of-the-desert feel to it, as it’s off the main road.

Sunset outside of The Rock Ranch camp.
*Note: This base camp has been recently bought by the American Alpine Club. The new contact email for them is: hueco@americanalpineclub.org

Hueco Rock Ranch.
Dogs are very tricky to bring along to Hueco. They’re prohibited in most areas and it’s often too hot to leave your dogs for a day, especially if traveling by van.

They are allowed in the park. However, it isn’t easy. Pets may be left unattended in an approved crate in the back of a truck, but “may not be exposed to excessive heat or cold (the rangers will make a subjective judgment regarding this).”

The other option is to leave them in a motorhome/ trailer/ van at a designated campsite.

Though, do note that leaving them in a tent is not a permitted option.

Dog Silhouette with Desert behind (outside park).
As far as rock climbers go, they are most of the remaining demographic, after the archaeological use of the area. It is, as you can assume, now one of the more regulated places to climb.

North Mountain Bouldering guide.
But it’s deeper than that. Hueco is a contender for the birthplace of modern bouldering. This kicked off in 1980, building to a climax in the early 2000’s, before the more recent restrictions slowed things down.

Climbing Guidebook for Hueco.
Before arrival, you must apply for a disorientation card. To obtain a card, you will have to watch the disorientation video. You will then be able to travel unescorted anywhere in the North Mountain zone.

Keep in mind that reservations are needed up to 3 months in advance for North Mountain, as it’s the biggest and most developed climbing area.

Zoned Access: The park is divided into self-guided and guided areas. Here’s a basic outline to help you differentiate where you’d like to go.

North Mountain (Self-Guided): Open to 70 people daily. It is highly recommended to reserve permits up to 90 days in advance by calling (512) 389-8911.

East Mountain, West Mountain, and East Spur (Guided Only): Access requires a guide. Tours must be booked at least one week in advance by calling (915) 857-1135

As most climbers live their lives according to freedom of will, these regulations often spike frustration and controversy.

This however, can be forgiven by learning about the area’s bountiful history.

There is a bouldering tour offered for climbers, which will be led by a member of the park staff.

If you’re not a climber or a major history buff and you just appreciate being in a beautiful place for a few days, there are some lovely trails for you. This is especially enchanting while the desert is in bloom.

You can even hike the Laguna Prieta trail to the Kiva cave. It’s a simple hike, about 1km in length. However temperatures can spike quite high during the day, so it’s always recommended in the desert to start early and bring plenty of water.

One moment, the sandy earth lies still. Next, a furry head emerges from a hole, stands upright on stubby hind legs, and lets out a sharp bark that echoes across the field.

Within seconds, dozens of other prairie dogs pop up from their burrows, scanning the horizon like tiny sentinels before diving back underground or scurrying across the grass to greet their neighbors.

This is Prairie Dog Town, tucked inside Lubbock’s Mackenzie Park—a quirky, free attraction where families can spend hours watching one of the most entertaining shows in Texas wildlife.

Where Prairie Dog Town Is Located

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-455-1024x576.jpg" alt="Wooden signage welcomes visitors to Prairie Dog Town, a unique attraction in Lubbock’s Mackenzie Park.

Prairie Dog Town sits inside Mackenzie Park on the north side of Lubbock, accessible from 4th Street and Interstate 27, overlooking Meadowbrook Golf Course.

The park spans more than 600 acres of West Texas terrain, but the prairie dog colony occupies a relatively compact area shaped roughly like a tortilla chip and surrounded by a waist-high stone wall.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-456-1024x768.jpg" alt="An information board about K.N.
Beyond the original enclosure, the prairie dogs have spread widely. Visitors now spot them near the golf driving range, along walking paths, and in grassy areas far from the viewing pavilion.

The Prairie Dog Experience

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="1000" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-457.jpg" alt="A lively group of prairie dogs munches happily on treats shared by visitors.

Prairie Dog Town became a tourist draw within five years of arriving at Mackenzie Park. It remains one of Lubbock’s most visited spots today.

A 2004 study ranked it the city’s fifth most popular attraction for out‑of‑town visitors, ahead of larger and flashier options.

The appeal is simple: admission is free, the animals are endlessly entertaining, and the experience works for children, adults, and anyone who enjoys nature.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="1000" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-460.jpg" alt="One prairie dog slips into its burrow, a glimpse of their underground world.

The colony now houses hundreds of black‑tailed prairie dogs in an underground maze of tunnels. Each burrow entrance sits atop a volcano‑shaped mound, about a foot high and several feet across.

These mounds serve as lookout towers, flood protection, and meeting spots where prairie dogs greet each other with nose‑to‑nose “kisses.”

When danger approaches, sentinels bark alarms that send the colony diving for cover.

Visitors often bring food, and the prairie dogs have learned to expect it.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="1000" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-459.jpg" alt="A prairie dog enjoys fresh lettuce, a cute and charming sight for onlookers.

Carrots, celery, lettuce, watermelon, and snap peas are among the healthier options, though the residents accept almost anything tossed their way.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="1000" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-458.jpg" alt="Carrots and lettuce left at a burrow show the healthy snacks guests provide for the prairie dogs.

Their round physiques suggest snacks are plentiful. Wildlife officials advise against junk food, but on weekends, you’ll see freeze‑dried peas flying alongside less nutritious offerings.

The prairie dogs don’t seem to mind.

Wildlife Beyond the Dogs

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-461-1024x683.jpg" alt="Burrowing owls nest in abandoned prairie dog burrows, adding another layer of wildlife to the park.

Prairie dogs are keystone species, supporting an entire ecosystem of other animals.

At Mackenzie Park, the most visible beneficiary is the burrowing owl, a small bird with bright yellow eyes that nests in abandoned prairie dog burrows.

The owls gain housing and even interpret the prairie dogs’ alarm calls, receiving early warnings when predators approach.

Spotting a burrowing owl at Prairie Dog Town requires patience and luck, but they’re present throughout the colony.

Planning Your Visit

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-462-1024x768.jpg" alt="Educational boards illustrate the black‑tailed prairie dogs’ underground homes, making learning fun and interactive.

Prairie Dog Town is free and open to the public from dawn to dusk, every day of the year.

The animals tend to be most active during morning and late afternoon hours, retreating to their burrows during midday heat, particularly in summer.

Weekdays draw smaller crowds than weekends, giving visitors more space to find a quiet spot along the stone wall and wait for the dogs to emerge.

Mackenzie Park offers plenty to explore beyond Prairie Dog Town. The park includes Meadowbrook Golf Course, hiking and biking trails, equestrian paths, two disc golf courses, a swimming pool, and Canyon Run Dog Park.

In the small town of Albany, Texas, history and culture meet in the most unexpected way. What was once a rugged 19th-century county jail has been transformed into one of the state’s most fascinating art museums.

The Old Jail Art Center blends frontier architecture with fine art collections, offering visitors a rare chance to step inside a preserved piece of Texas history while exploring galleries filled with works from around the world.

It’s a cultural surprise tucked into rural West Texas, and it has become a destination for travelers who crave both heritage and creativity.

Where the Old Jail Art Center Is Located

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/jail-museum-courtyard-1024x576.webp" alt="Courtyard of the Old Jail Art Center, where sculptures and outdoor installations greet visitors even before stepping inside.

The museum is located in Albany, a quiet town in North-Central Texas known for its historic downtown and preserved frontier buildings.

Albany sits along the Texas Forts Trail, a region rich in history and heritage. The Old Jail Art Center itself began as the Shackelford County Jail, built in the late 1800s.

Its thick stone walls and barred windows remain intact, standing as a reminder of its frontier past.

Over time, the site expanded into a multi-building museum campus, connecting the old jail with modern gallery spaces and courtyards that invite exploration.

The Historic Jail Architecture

Joshua Hagler’s Cell Series: Nihil II installation as displayed at the Old Jail Art Center — contemporary art set against historic jail architecture. Credit: @oldjailartcenter

The original two-story limestone jail is still the heart of the museum. Visitors can see remnants of the old cells and ironwork, a stark reminder of its former purpose.

From the outside, the fortress-like exterior contrasts sharply with the refined art displayed inside.

The adaptive reuse design links the historic structure to contemporary galleries, creating a unique blend of old and new.

Courtyards and walkways connect the buildings, allowing guests to wander between frontier architecture and modern exhibition spaces in a seamless flow.

Art Collections and Exhibits

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/jail-art-exhibit-1024x768.webp" alt="Cowboy and Texas-themed artworks inside the Old Jail Art Center — one of many rotating exhibits spanning Western heritage to modern pieces. Credit: John Heddrick

What makes the Old Jail Art Center remarkable is the quality of its collections.

Inside, visitors will find American and European paintings and sculptures, curated exhibitions, and rotating shows that rival those of larger city museums.

The institution also highlights regional and Western art, showcasing Texas and Southwest artists whose works reflect cultural and historical themes.

Educational programs and community events further enrich the experience, proving that even in a small town, art can thrive on a global scale.

Visiting the Museum

The atmosphere at the Old Jail Art Center is calm and uncrowded, making it an ideal stop for those who prefer quiet cultural exploration.

Galleries are easy to navigate, and the welcoming small-town setting adds to the charm.

Visitors should check the museum’s hours, which vary by season, and plan enough time to explore the multiple buildings on the campus.

Pairing a visit with a walking tour of historic Albany offers a deeper appreciation of the town’s frontier heritage.

Bahama Buck’s didn’t start as a nationwide chain. It began as a 240‑square‑foot shaved ice shack on dusty Brownfield Highway in Lubbock.

A 20‑year‑old Texas Tech student, Blake Buchanan, wanted a summer job that wasn’t mowing lawns or flipping burgers.

In 1990, he found a used ice shaver in the Thrifty Nickel classifieds. With help from three generations of family, he built the stand in his parents’ backyard. He hauled it through town to a rented patch of land and opened on June 12, 1990.

Thirty‑five years later, Bahama Buck’s has grown to more than 100 locations in ten states and Puerto Rico.

Yet the headquarters is still in Lubbock — the West Texas city of cotton fields, Texas Tech football, and now, what many call the best shaved ice in America.

Where It All Began

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="750" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-173.jpg" alt="The colorful façade of Bahama Buck’s bursts with tropical design, instantly setting a fun island vibe. Credit: Adrian S.

The original Bahama Buck’s story is now a local legend. Blake Buchanan and his future wife, Kippi, built the first stand with scrap wood and family help.

His father, Tom, grandfathers Truman Golemon and Paul Buchanan, and Texas Tech friends all pitched in.

The shack was tiny—workers stood “cheek to cheek, butt to butt”—but the fluffy shaved ice was an instant hit in Lubbock’s 100‑degree summers.

The tropical idea quickly grew. Bahama Buck’s was incorporated in 1992, expanded to Arizona in 1993, and sold its first franchise in 1994.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-176-1024x768.jpg" alt="Inside, the bright and inviting space showcases tons of flavorings and menu options, with spacious tables for guests.

By 2010, the company marked its 20th anniversary with a Guinness World Record: the world’s largest shaved ice, weighing over 25,000 pounds.

Today, Lubbock still boasts multiple locations, including the busy 82nd Street shop near Texas Tech, where students and families flock during the long West Texas summer.

Over 100 Original Flavors

Rows upon rows of flavorings line the counter, highlighting the endless possibilities for shaved ice. Credit: Monty Rodgers

What sets Bahama Buck’s apart from typical snow cone stands starts with the ice itself.

The company calls it “Sno” and describes it as light, airy, and fluffy—nothing like the crunchy, compacted ice that characterizes old-school snow cones.

The texture absorbs syrup evenly, creating a smooth, melt-in-your-mouth consistency throughout the entire cup rather than a sugary pool at the bottom.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-179-1024x576.jpg" alt="The huge menu offers signature flavors, but guests can also create their own sno masterpiece. Credit: Mari Adventures

The flavor menu stretches past 100 original options. Classics include cherry, blue raspberry, and strawberry, but Bahama Buck’s leans hard into tropical and creative territory.

Tiger’s Blood (a blend of strawberry, watermelon, and coconut) has a cult following. Wavebender combines banana, pineapple, and coconut rum flavor.

There’s even a Red Raider flavor honoring Blake Buchanan’s alma mater, Texas Tech University.

Beyond the standards, the menu offers birthday cake, wedding cake, cheesecake, toasted coconut, gummy bear, Dreamsicle, mango, piña colada, passion fruit, Jamaican punch, and dozens more.

Sugar-free versions are available for nearly every flavor. Sour options include Warheads Lemonberry and Sour Patch Blue Raspberry for those who want their shaved ice with a pucker.

The real fun comes from mixing. Customers can create their own combinations—half tiger’s blood and half toasted coconut, for example, or three flavors layered in stripes.

The customization possibilities number in the thousands.

Signature Creations and Upgrades

Plain shaved ice is just the beginning. Bahama Buck’s has developed signature preparations that transform the basic Sno into more elaborate desserts.

The Bahama Rama Mama adds a scoop of Blue Bell ice cream to the bottom of the cup, with the shaved ice piled on top and finished with Tropic Creme (a creamy, sweet drizzle).

It’s available in vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry ice cream versions, and essentially turns shaved ice into a hybrid between a snow cone and an ice cream sundae.

Tropic Creme also appears as a standalone topping—the signature condensed-milk-style drizzle that gives many Bahama Buck’s creations their distinctive striped appearance.

Other topping options include chamoy and chili salt for Mexican-style Mangonadas, gummy bears for the Gummy Bear Sno, Nerds candy, Sour Patch sauce, Oreo pieces, whipped cream, and party sprinkles.

Beyond shaved ice, Bahama Buck’s serves Island Smoothies in both fruit blends (made with real fruit and non-fat vanilla Greek yogurt) and cream blends (milkshake-style with ice cream).

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="765" height="1020" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-180.jpg" alt="Bahama Buck’s acai bowl proves they serve more than sno cones, with smoothies and fruit bowls adding healthy variety.
The Lubbock Experience

Stepping into any Bahama Buck’s feels like a mini-vacation, and that’s by design. The island-themed décor features bright colors, surf imagery, beach references, and tropical signage.

The atmosphere aims for fun and relaxed rather than fast-food functional. Staff members are trained to be friendly and upbeat—part of the company’s mission to create what they call “the Ultimate Tropical Dessert Experience.”

Sizes range from kiddie to large, with pricing that varies by location but generally runs between $5 and $8 for a standard shaved ice.

The chain typically opens around noon and stays open until 10 p.m. or later, though hours vary by location and season.

Most locations operate year-round—because, as any West Texan knows, warm weather in Lubbock isn’t limited to summer.

For more information about Bahama Buck’s, including menus, seasonal flavors, and store hours, visit bahamabucks.com or check the Lubbock locations’ social media pages.

Bahama Buck’s started as a tiny shaved ice shack in Lubbock. More than 30 years later, it’s a Texas original serving fluffy ice, bold flavors, and pure summer nostalgia.

There’s a certain kind of quiet out in West Texas that feels expensive.

Not in a flashy, city type of way. No, I mean when the Texas sky stretches so wide it feels like it’ll sweep you up in it, and the wind moves slowly, like it’s got nowhere else to be.

That’s precisely the quiet that leads you straight to Perini Ranch Steakhouse in West Texas.

And if you’ve never been … this isn’t your typical well-let’s-go-out-for-a-steak night.

A perfectly seared, USDA Prime steak with deep char marks sits alongside grilled jalapeños on a vintage plate, embodying West Texas’ finest beef. (Photo credit: Perini Ranch Steakhouse)

This is Texas, dressed up.

Boots polished. Shirt pressed. Even a belt buckle you don’t wear every day. Jeans are welcome, but business-casual attire fits right in at Perini.

You’ll still see dust on the road in, though. That’s part of the deal.

Pulling up feels like you’re on the precipice of a night of Great Gatsby proportions, even if all you see at first is ranch land and a low-slung building that doesn’t need to show off.

Because what’s inside? Not loud. Not showy.

Just confident. Like it knows it doesn’t have to prove a thing.

Before you sit and unbutton your jacket

First things first! This is not a “roll in whenever you feel like it” kind of place.

You’ll want a reservation. Book it online to save yourself and your party the trouble later. Pick how many people you’ll have in your group and what time you’ll all get there.

Savor the famous Perini Ranch hominy, baked with green chiles, bacon, and cheddar cheese—the perfect side for a legendary West Texas steak dinner. (Photo credit: Perini Ranch Steakhouse)

Perini Ranch Steakhouse is the type of spot I’d plan a trip around, not just a dinner. Crank up the fun by planning a whole Texas road trip, if you want, with themed stops along the way. r if it’s a surprise, turn each road trip stop into a clue about Perini, keeping your friends guessing until the very end.

And once they’re there, they’ll understand why.

Perini is typically open for dinner service, with lunch hours that depend on the day or by season. They’re open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Weekend hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Note that they’re closed on Monday!

Experience the rustic charm of Perini Ranch’s dining room, where warm wood, stone fireplaces, and Texas hospitality create a legendary steakhouse vibe. (Photo credit: Perini Ranch Steakhouse)

Hours shift, especially with private events, so I’d recommend checking ahead.

That’s part of the exclusivity. You’re not just walking into a restaurant.

You’re stepping into an experience that’s carefully timed and curated.

Now let’s talk about getting there. It’s out in Buffalo Gap. You’ll turn off onto a quiet road, pass fences and mesquite trees, and then suddenly, it’s there.

A ranch-style building that looks like it belongs exactly where it is.

Parking? It’s mostly gravel and open space, easy to navigate, without tight city parking stress.

You step out of your car, and the air feels different. Cleaner. Slower.

A thick, hand-selected ribeye is seasoned with the ranch’s signature rub. (Photo credit: Perini Ranch Steakhouse)

Like your evening just got a little more intentional.

Now here’s something I like about Perini. This place doesn’t rush you. It’s not a to-go bag pressed into your hand, as someone’s wiping the floor around your feet, shooing you out the door.

From the moment you stroll in, everything moves at a pace that says, “You’re here for a while.”

And you should be. This isn’t a clock-tickin’ dinner before your next soccer game or dance rehearsal.

This is the stop.

Inside, you’ll find a blend of upscale and ranch decor style that feels distinctly Texan.

Wood beams. Warm lighting. White tablecloths that somehow don’t feel stuffy.

As twilight falls, the glowing lights of Perini Ranch Steakhouse beckon travelers to Buffalo Gap for an unforgettable legendary Texas dining experience. (Photo Credit: Perini Ranch Steakhouse)

It’s refined without losing its roots.

You’ll see someone in a blazer at one table and another person in boots and a crisp button-down at the next.

Both fit perfectly. That’s the magic of it.

It’s upscale, yes. But it never forgets where it came from.

Let’s talk timing! Even with a reservation, this place gets busy. This is especially true on weekends and during hectic travel seasons, such as holidays, summer, etc.

Saturday evening? That’s the busiest time.

If you’re looking for something a little quieter, nabbing a reservation earlier or later in the evening gives you a more relaxed pace.

Though, even when it’s full, there’s a hum in the room.

The outdoor patio at Perini Ranch captures the spirit of West Texas, providing a scenic and relaxed setting to enjoy the world’s finest chuckwagon beef.
If you thrive on the energy of a night like that, go for it! Making new friends, laughing with tables next to you, and getting into the center of the action is one way to spend a night out at Perini.

Glasses clinking. Low conversations. The occasional laugh that carries just far enough.

It feels like everyone there knows they’re somewhere full of memories. A snowglobe in time.

And they’re soaking it in.

Service here deserves its own moment. If you’ve got questions about cuts, preparation, or wine pairings, you’re in good hands.

Unsurprisingly, Perini is big on events. Weddings, private dinners, celebrations.

They even have a private dining room! Lean in close as your grandmother pats your hand and shares a bit of wisdom about a long marriage, or find yourself warming up to the in-laws you weren’t sure about — turns out a great meal has a way of doing that.

If you’re planning something memorable, this backdrop does half the work for you. Let it!

Perini converted an old hay barn into something genuinely luxurious, for those Texans who love the high life coupled with a sense of homegrown, farmhouse roots.

There’s outdoor seating, too, to have a night under the stars, pointing out constellations, filling your lungs with fresh air.

Families gather under the shaded wooden pavilions at Perini Ranch. (Photo credit: Perini Ranch Steakhouse)

On chilly nights, they have a fireplace that keeps you warm and cozy, as conversations deepen.

West Texas sky. Ranch atmosphere. Elevated dining. You don’t need much else.

By the time you’re seated, napkin in your lap, you’ll feel it.

That shift. From everyday to occasion.

And you haven’t even looked at the menu yet.

A menu that honors steak like a legacy

Let’s get straight to it. This steakhouse doesn’t just serve steak.

It honors it. And that honor stems from generations of ranching, of understanding cattle, of knowing exactly what makes a cut shine.

Budget accordingly — expect to spend somewhere in the $50–100 range per person for a full night out.

Start with an appetizer, to ease into it. Their Jalapeño Bites or Fried Quail Legs nod to Texas flavors without overwhelming what’s coming next.

It’s not about reinventing the wheel here. It’s about doing everything just right.

Then comes the steak. And this is where things get serious.

The ribeye? That’s the star for a reason.

Only the top 3% of beef merits Perini’s Prime label. Only 3%!

Deep, rich flavor. Cooked to your specifications. You take that first bite, and there’s a moment. A pause. Like your brain needs a second to catch up to what just happened.

Filets, strip steaks, all the classics. They’re here, and they’ll get your mouth watering.

A juicy, charbroiled West Texas burger topped with melted cheese and grilled red onions, served with fresh pickles and tomato. (Photo credit: Perini Ranch Steakhouse)

I personally can’t pass up a chance to add mushrooms and onions to a meal like this. And Perini lets you opt for additions, including Grilled Mushrooms and Onions. Yes, please!

In Texas, sides are never just an afterthought. Cowboy Potatoes sound good to me, topped off with butter and garlic.

Veggies include green beans, asparagus, and zucchini. A good balance to all that richness on the plate.

Drinks? You’ve got options. Perini’s wine list pairs well with the richness of the menu. Cocktails are classic, not trendy.

Unwind with a classic Old Fashioned by the warm glow of the fire. (Photo credit: Perini Ranch Steakhouse)

A sweet tea, at some point in the night, takes you right back to those homegrown roots. Because no matter how upscale it gets, you’re still in Texas.

Dessert at Perini is where things soften. Where the meal slows down. You’re full, no doubt, but you’ll still find room.

Because it feels like the right way to end things. Something a little indulgent. Something that says, “Stay a little longer.”

And you will. That’s the thing about Perini. You don’t rush out. You linger. You talk. You sit back and take it all in. The room. The people. The feeling.

It’s not just about what you ate. It’s about a moment caught in amber — West Texas, warm light, and people you love.

Strawberries and cream are piled high on a flaky shortcake biscuit.
By the time you step back outside, the night’s settled in. The stars are winking. And out there, in West Texas, they don’t hold back.

How do I get there, though? Perini Ranch Steakhouse is located at:

Almost forgot — here’s how to find it:

3002 FM 89, Buffalo Gap, TX 79508

You’ll stand there for a second longer than you meant to. Keys in hand. Door still closed. Just … looking. One arm around a friend, family member, or spouse.

Because something about the night feels fuller now. Like you’ve been part of something that doesn’t happen everywhere.

That quiet I called to your mind? It’s still there.

But it feels different now. Like it’s holding onto the memory of the evening.

As you drive off, gravel crunching beneath your tires, one thought settles in real easy, like that dog out front on the porch slipping into a snooze on the hottest day of the summer.

Some places feed you. Others stay with you. Perini Ranch Steakhouse? It does both.

The canyon walls rise 800 feet on either side, striped in reds, oranges, and purples that shift with the sun.

Your horse picks its way along a trail that threads between cottonwoods on the canyon floor, toward rock formations with names like the Lighthouse that have been landmarks for riders since the Comanche owned these lands.

This is Palo Duro Canyon—the second-largest canyon system in the United States, stretching 120 miles across the Texas Panhandle and offering horseback riding through landscapes that look nothing like the rest of Texas.

Where Palo Duro Canyon State Park Is Located

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-64-1024x682.jpg" alt="Trails winding through Palo Duro showcase riders on horseback, traversing scenic paths against dramatic canyon views.

The park lies in the Texas Panhandle, about 25 miles south of Amarillo and just outside the town of Canyon.

The address is 11450 State Highway Park Road 5, Canyon, TX 79015. From Amarillo, the drive takes about 30 minutes—close enough for a day trip, remote enough to feel like another world.

The canyon itself extends far beyond the park boundaries, running roughly 120 miles from Canyon to Silverton and reaching widths up to 20 miles in places.

The state park occupies the northernmost and most accessible section, where a paved scenic drive descends 500 feet from the rim to the canyon floor.

The Equestrian Experience

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-63-1024x768.jpg" alt="Groups of tourists and locals ride horseback through Palo Duro Canyon, experiencing the rugged beauty up close.

The park dedicates 1,500 acres specifically to horseback riding, with access to trails that wind through terrain ranging from sandy canyon floor to rocky ascents toward dramatic formations.

Equestrians can also share two additional trails with hikers and mountain bikers. The experience differs fundamentally from typical trail riding—you’re not circling a ranch corral or following a creek through gentle hills.

You’re riding through one of the largest canyon systems in North America, past towering sandstone walls, beneath cottonwoods that have shaded riders for generations, and alongside geological features that dwarf everything around them.

For riders bringing their own horses, the park requires a negative Coggins test dated within the past 12 months.

The Equestrian Campground provides 10 horse-friendly sites with picnic tables, fire rings, and water faucets.

Four joined horse pens—each holding up to two horses—operate first-come, first-served basis. Visitors can bring portable corrals.

Showers are located about a third of a mile from the equestrian area. The maximum capacity is eight per site, combining people and horses. Reservations must be made through the park.

The Lighthouse Trail—the park’s most famous route—permits horses on its 5.9-mile round trip that leads toward the iconic 310-foot Lighthouse rock formation.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-70-1024x768.jpg" alt="The famous Lighthouse Trail at Palo Duro is a favorite route for horseback riding, leading to the iconic rock formation.

The trail offers 531 feet of elevation gain, taking riders through low shrub areas with colorful cliff walls rising on all sides.

Other equestrian options include the Juniper Cliffside Trail and dedicated equestrian-only paths through the canyon’s quieter sections.

Guided Rides for Every Level

For those without their own horses, several stables offer guided canyon rides.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-65-1024x768.jpg" alt="Horse stables in Palo Duro invite guests to interact with the animals before setting off on their adventure.
For 10,000 years, Hueco Tanks has lured hunters, artists, explorers, and climbers to its desert hills.

Today, this West Texas landmark stands as the birthplace of modern bouldering—where the V-scale was born, crash pads became standard, and climbers from around the globe still gather to test their limits.

Where Hueco Tanks Is Located

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="817" height="1020" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/hueco-signage.webp" alt="The Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site sign welcomes you with dramatic rock formations in the background, a premier destination for rock climbing. Credit: Victor Medina

The park sits approximately 32 miles northeast of central El Paso in far West Texas, accessible via Montana Avenue (U.S. Route 62/180) by turning north at Ranch-to-Market Road 2775.

The drive takes about 40 minutes from the El Paso airport.

The name comes from the Spanish word “hueco,” meaning “hollow.”

Natural depressions in the rock—the huecos—trap and hold rainwater for months at a time, creating an oasis in the high desert basin between the Franklin Mountains to the west and the Hueco Mountains to the east.

The climbable rocks at Hueco feature natural holes and grips, perfect for hands and feet to propel upward. Credit: LTL

For millennia, this reliable water source drew travelers through an otherwise unforgiving landscape.

The park consists of three syenite mountains (a weak form of granite) plus one spur: North Mountain, East Mountain, West Mountain, and East Spur.

The Rock and What Makes It Special

A cool view framed between massive rocks shows the thrilling angles climbers experience at Hueco Tanks. Credit: Ronda Stavinoha

The rocks at Hueco Tanks are remnants of molten domes that pushed up through the earth and were weathered and eroded over millions of years.

The result is a landscape unlike anywhere else in the climbing world: massive, rounded boulders covered in pocket holds that fit hands, feet, and knees perfectly.

The texture offers exceptional grip, and the variety of formations—slabs, roofs, vertical faces, overhangs—creates an endless puzzle of climbing challenges.

What separates Hueco from other bouldering destinations is the steep, gymnastic style of climbing.

Many routes follow overhanging walls and ceilings, requiring powerful moves, torso twisting, dynamic lunging, knee-locking, and heel-hooking.

The famous Mushroom Boulder (now closed to protect nearby pictographs) once hosted classic problems that required steel-grip strength and creative body positioning.

Routes with names like Nobody Here Gets Out Alive, Moonshine Roof, and Full Service have become all-time American bouldering classics.

Routes for Every Skill Level

A climber scales the rugged rocks at Hueco, showcasing the park’s adventurous spirit. Credit: Pámela Bóveda-Aguirre

Despite its reputation as a destination for elite climbers, Hueco offers abundant problems for beginners and intermediates.

The warm-up boulders near the North Mountain parking lot provide easier routes with short approaches and safe landings—an ideal learning environment.

Guidebooks list problems across the full range of difficulty, and it’s common to find beginner problems right next to expert-level challenges, allowing groups with mixed abilities to climb together.

A fascinating rock formation at Hueco displays swirl-like patterns, nature’s artistry carved in stone.

That said, the park’s most famous routes are brutally difficult.

The Hueco Tanks Rock Rodeo, a bouldering competition first staged in 1989 by the El Paso Climbers Club and now run by the American Alpine Club, draws professional climbers who push the limits of what’s physically possible.

Routes like Esperanza, located on an overhanging ceiling covered in small cracks and edges, stood for years as one of the hardest climbs in the United States.

Access and Permits

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/hueco-sunrise-1024x576.webp" alt="Sunrise at Hueco Tanks paints the landscape in breathtaking light, a moment of pure desert beauty.

Here’s what every visitor needs to understand: Hueco Tanks restricts access to protect its fragile cultural and natural resources.

The park is divided into self-guided and guided areas, and you must plan ahead to visit either.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/hueco-fomratin-1024x768.webp" alt="More towering rock formations at Hueco invite climbers to test their skills and explore the rugged terrain.

North Mountain is the self-guided area, but only 70 people are allowed access at any one time.

Sixty call-ahead reservation spots can be booked up to three months in advance by calling (512) 389-8911.

Ten walk-in spots are available day-of, but during climbing season (mid-November through mid-March), reservations fill quickly. Arrive without one, and you may not get in.

East Mountain, West Mountain, and East Spur require a guide—either a volunteer or a commercial guide.

Tours are available Wednesday through Sunday when guides are available, with groups limited to 10 people.

Book tours at least one week in advance by calling (915) 857-1135. Tours cost $5 per person ages 13 and up, $2 for ages 2-12, plus park entry fees.

The current entrance fee for North Mountain is $7 per person per day, or free with a Texas State Parks Pass ($70 annually).

The park does not provide climbing instruction or equipment.

Bring your own climbing shoes, crash pads, chalk, food, and water.

Dress for the desert: sunblock, hat, hiking boots for approaches, and appropriate layers for variable weather.

Beyond Climbing

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1020" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/hueco-petroglyphs-1.webp" alt="Ancient petroglyphs etched into sandstone boulders at Hueco reveal centuries of history and culture.

Hueco Tanks is both a state park and a state historic site.

Over thousands of years, prehistoric peoples and Native Americans painted images of masks, snakes, and other figures on rock faces throughout the park.

More than 200 rock art sites have been documented. Ranger-led pictograph tours explore these cultural treasures.

The park offers 20 campsites with restrooms, hot showers, and a dump station, though reservations are limited to three nights.

Many climbers stay at the nearby Hueco Rock Ranch, which offers camping and lodging with access to commercial guides. Pets must stay on paved surfaces and cannot accompany you to the boulders.

Planning Your Visit

For more information about permits, climbing access rules, and seasonal conditions, visit the Texas Parks & Wildlife Hueco Tanks website or call the reservation line at (512) 389-8911.

Hueco Tanks offers one of the most diverse and celebrated rock climbing landscapes in Texas, where desert solitude meets world-class stone, and 10,000 years of human history live on the same walls that climbers touch today.

The first time you see Monahans Sandhills State Park, you might think you’ve driven into a mirage.

Rolling dunes of pale quartz sand rise out of the flat West Texas landscape, some reaching 70 feet high, with no ocean for 500 miles in any direction. It looks like the Sahara wandered into the Permian Basin and decided to stay.

This is not a desert—technically it’s a semi-arid ecosystem with groundwater beneath the surface—but it feels like another planet entirely.

And the best part? You can rent a plastic disc at headquarters and sled down those dunes like they’re covered in snow.

Where Monahans Sandhills State Park Is Located

The park sits in Ward and Winkler counties, about six miles northeast of the town of Monahans and roughly 30 miles west of Odessa.

Take Exit 86 off Interstate 20 and follow Park Road 41 north. Midland is about 55 miles to the east; El Paso is a few hours west.

The town of Monahans itself was established in the late 1800s as a water stop for steam engines on the Texas and Pacific Railway.

The 3,840-acre state park is actually a small slice of a much larger dune field that stretches approximately 200 miles from south of Monahans northwest into New Mexico.

A Landscape That Never Sits Still

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="692" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/monahan-sand-dunes-1024x692.jpg" alt="Vast sand dunes stretching beneath an open sky at Monahans Sandhills State Park—West Texas at its most surreal.

Wind shapes everything here. Throughout the year, the dunes change form as prevailing winds shift: southeast in summer, northwest in winter, southwest in spring.

The individual dunes take on different shapes—coppice, wind-shadow, barchan, parabolic—depending on how the wind sculpts them.

In general, the dunes don’t migrate far, retaining their approximate position from year to year, but their contours change constantly.

Footprints disappear in hours. The landscape you see on Monday may look subtly different by Wednesday.

Active dunes—the ones that shift and blow—are the park’s showpiece. Stabilized dunes, anchored by vegetation, have become sandhills.

Both types exist here, and walking from one to the other gives you a sense of how the land changes over time.

Sledding the Dunes

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="772" height="1024" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/monahan-sledding-772x1024.jpg" alt="A POV shot moments before sand sledding down the dunes at Monahans Sandhills State Park—pure, simple fun.

Sand sledding is the park’s signature activity.

Rent a plastic sand disc at headquarters between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM daily, or bring your own sled, toboggan, or even plywood.

The catch: every ride down means a climb back up. Trudging up loose sand is a workout, especially under the West Texas sun. Bring water. Lots of water.

One honest note from visitor reviews: sledding success varies. Sand conditions, slope steepness, and technique all factor in. Even if the sledding underwhelms, the scenery delivers.

Exploring Without Trails

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/monahan-sunset-1024x683.webp" alt="Sunset at Monahans Sandhills State Park, where soft sky colors meet seemingly endless sand.

The park has no marked trails, which is the point.

You’re free to explore anywhere across the dunes, and the wind erases evidence of previous visitors quickly enough that it can feel like you’re the first person to ever walk here.

The best spots are often more than a mile from the highway, where the silence and the scale of the landscape hit hardest.

That freedom comes with responsibility. It’s easy to get disoriented when every dune looks similar, so pay attention to your bearings.

Planning Your Visit

The park is open daily from 7 AM to 10 PM. Day-use entry costs $4 per person for those 13 and older. Sand discs are available for rent at headquarters until 4:30 PM.

Camping runs $15 per night at the Willow Draw Campground, which has 26 sites with water and electricity, picnic tables, BBQ grills, fire rings, and shade shelters.

Ground fires are not allowed. An 800-acre equestrian area offers horseback exploration.

Where the Wind Writes the Landscape

Monahans Sandhills State Park doesn’t look like Texas. It doesn’t feel like Texas.

It feels like you’ve stepped into a parallel world where the rules are different—where oak trees grow three feet tall with 70-foot roots, where the landscape rewrites itself overnight, and where the best way to get down a hill is on a piece of plastic.

It’s a Texas-sized sandbox for anyone who ever dreamed of sledding without snow.
