It earned its International Dark Sky Park certification in 2020, Minnesota’s only one. With so little development for miles around, the Milky Way arches over the lakes and mirrors back off the still water.

The park leans into its skies with events all year, and the boat launches at the Rainy Lake and Kabetogama visitor centers put you right on the water. Late summer through fall gives you long, clear nights.

Getting out onto one of the lakes by canoe or boat drops you into total darkness, with water on every side and the whole galaxy reflected below you. It is about as immersive as stargazing gets.

I think that is a mistake. The right town, dusted white and strung with lights, is living proof that winter can be the reason you travel, not the thing you grit your teeth and wait out.

There is a specific kind of hush that only lands on a mountain Main Street after a fresh storm, when the storefronts glow gold and the peaks handle the rest of the scenery.

What these places share is snow-globe magic. Every one of them turns cold weather into the whole point of the trip instead of the price of admission.

Some were built around chairlifts and some were mining camps that simply refused to fade, but each has learned to wear a heavy snowfall like a party dress.

Below are six towns across America that seem practically built for the cold months, from a Colorado gold-rush village pinned under 350 inches of powder to an Alaskan resort that measures its snow in feet. A few will surprise you. Bundle up.

1. Breckenridge, Colorado

Start high, because Breckenridge does. The town sits at 9,600 feet, and its ski resort runs the highest chairlift in North America, the Imperial Express, which tops out above 13,000 feet where roughly 355 inches of snow pile up each season.

What I love, though, is the Main Street underneath all that altitude. Candy-colored Victorian storefronts, painted pink and blue and yellow, have stood since the 1880s gold rush, and every December they nearly vanish under thousands of tiny lights.

The whole downtown is a National Historic District, one of the largest in Colorado, so the walk between coffee shops doubles as a walk through mining-camp history.

Time your trip for Ullr Fest, the town’s rowdy tribute to the Norse god of snow, and you will watch a whole mountain community cheerfully begging the sky for a big winter.

There is a parade, a bonfire, and a general sense that everyone here has decided cold is something to celebrate rather than survive. It usually listens.

When your toes go numb, duck into one of the old saloons for green chile and a hot drink. Breckenridge has been warming up cold prospectors since 1859, and it still knows how.

A free gondola links the town to the base of the mountain, so you can leave the car parked and let the snow fall on somebody else’s windshield.

From that station, the Conway Scenic Railroad still rolls out past frozen rivers and white peaks, which is honestly the most charming way I can imagine to see snow without doing any of the steering.

You sit by a fogged window with something warm in your hands while the valley slides by, and someone else worries about the tracks.

Cranmore first opened in 1938, making it one of the oldest ski areas in the country, and it rises right at the edge of the village. That means you can carve a few runs in the morning and browse the shops by afternoon, all without ever moving your car.

When the snow gets deep enough, the town floods the common at Schouler Park and locals lace up for a skate under the depot lights.

The Mount Washington Valley around it is also, quietly, a shopper’s town, with a long strip of tax-free New Hampshire outlets for anyone who needs an excuse besides the mountains. Pro tip: come on a snowy weekday and you will have both the trails and the sidewalks nearly to yourself.

3. Whitefish, Montana

Whitefish Mountain Resort, which longtime locals still call the Big Mountain, opened in 1947 and catches around 300 inches of snow a year.

Up on the ridges, wind and ice slowly coat the pines until they become the ghostly frozen shapes locals call snow ghosts, and skiing between them at dawn feels like moving through a field of white statues.

It sits close enough to Glacier National Park that the whole valley feels genuinely wild, in a way most groomed ski towns lost long ago. The park empties out for the winter, so the scenery is enormous and the crowds are gone.

Whitefish Lake sits right at the edge of town, freezing over into a wide white plain that locals cross on skates and skis when the ice runs thick.

There is also a wonderful practicality to the place. The Amtrak Empire Builder still stops at the historic downtown depot, meaning you can arrive by train, walk to dinner, and be riding a chairlift within twenty minutes the next morning.

Browse the shops on Central Avenue, catch the holiday train that runs through downtown each December, then point yourself at the hill. That easy mix of small-town and big-mountain is the Whitefish magic.

4. Red River, New Mexico

You would never guess the Southwest could hand you a proper snow town, yet Red River delivers one at 8,750 feet in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico.

The whole village sits tucked into a narrow river valley, so a fresh storm turns the surrounding peaks and rooftops white all at once.

The best part is the geography. Ski lifts run right into downtown off Main Street, so you can step out of a shop, click into your skis, and ride straight up the mountain. Few towns anywhere let you thread the lift line and the coffee line quite this easily.

The ski area opened in 1959, and old-timers still love to point out that some of the early lift towers were welded together from surplus oil-derrick steel. Around 214 inches of snow fall here each winter, enough to keep the runs humming from Thanksgiving well into spring.

The town keeps an easygoing frontier spirit, all wooden storefronts and mountain air, and it leans into winter hard. Every year it throws a full torchlight parade down the mountain, skiers snaking through the dark with flames in hand before the fireworks go up.

5. Girdwood, Alaska

If you want winter turned all the way up, point the car toward Girdwood. This small resort town just south of Anchorage, tucked against the Chugach Mountains at the head of Turnagain Arm, averages an almost unbelievable 55 feet of snow a year.

Alyeska Resort anchors it, dropping 2,500 lift-served feet from a base that sits nearly at sea level. That means glacier-fed peaks tumbling almost straight down toward the water below, a kind of vertical drama you simply do not get in the Lower 48.

The old aerial tram hauls you up over spruce trees buried to their necks in powder, and skiers duck off into the trees on either side.

Ride that tram up on a clear evening and you might just catch the northern lights rippling green over the snow. That is the kind of memory a person plans a whole trip around, and up here it is less a long shot than a decent bet.

The town itself began as a gold-mining supply stop, named for a prospector, and it still has a scrappy, end-of-the-road charm underneath all the resort polish.

6. Bardstown, Kentucky

Historic inns, a lit-up Court Square, and Kentucky warmth make this a warm, easy choice. Raise a glass of the good stuff at midnight.

Founded in 1780, Bardstown ranks among Kentucky’s oldest towns. It throws the Kentucky Bourbon Festival each fall, but the distilleries along the Bourbon Trail pour year-round, so a winter visit skips the crowds entirely.

Stroll past the historic town’s old churches and the Old Talbott Tavern, a stagecoach inn dating to the late 1700s. Barrel warehouses dot the surrounding hills with that unmistakable aging-bourbon aroma.

7. Bisbee, Arizona

The 1902 Copper Queen Hotel still holds court downtown, all Victorian brick and old-mining-camp glamour. Galleries, saloons, and mild desert winters make it a warm-weather counterpoint to the snowy picks.

Wander the hillside lanes, catch live music in a historic bar, and welcome the year somewhere gloriously offbeat.

Perched about a mile high, Bisbee stays crisp in winter without the deep snow of the picks farther north. The Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum fills the old Phelps Dodge company headquarters right on the main square.

Ride the Queen Mine train into a real early-1900s copper tunnel, or tackle the famous 1,000-step tour of the town’s outdoor staircases. Mild winter days make walking these hills a pleasure.

8. Marfa, Texas

My home state earns its spot with Marfa, the high-desert art town that trades crowds for wide skies and pure strangeness of the best kind.

Hotel Paisano hosted the cast of the 1955 film Giant, and the town has drawn artists ever since, from minimalist installations to the roadside Prada Marfa sculpture. Then there are the famous Marfa Lights, mysterious glows on the horizon.

It is remote, strange, and unlike anywhere else. Chase the lights, then toast a new year under some of the darkest, starriest skies in Texas.

The town sits at nearly 4,700 feet on the high plains of far West Texas, so winter nights turn cold and sharp. A viewing platform east of town, built just for the Marfa Lights, gives you a place to park and watch once the sky goes dark.

Fresh powder, covered bridges, and cocoa by the fire make this the coziest way to trade one year for the next. Storybook, start to finish.

1. New York City, New York

This corner of Midtown becomes one long holiday postcard, and it stays lit well past midnight for anyone willing to brave the cold.
