Leading Stephen F. Austin to historic upset over No. 1 Duke, then buzzer-beating hero Nate Bain gets surprise of a lifetime
Stephen F. Austin upset Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium and handed the Blue Devils their first home non-conference loss in 150 games, which captured the nation’s attention on Tuesday night.
There were such many notable performances from the game by Lumberjacks, including guard Kevon Harris with a game-high 26 points, and forward Gavin Kensmil filled up the stat sheet with 15 points, 4 assists, 7 rebounds and 2 steals. Still, the player who grabbed most of the headlines on Tuesday night was Nate Bain. His full-court transition lay-up successfully beat the buzzer, giving SFA the 85-83 OT victory.
Though, the good news for Bain didn’t stop on that Tuesday night. That’s a welcome change for the Bahamas native in his final year at SFA, whose world has been turned upside down in recent months.
At 8:16 p.m. on Wednesday, fans had raised an amount of more than $95,000 through a GoFundMe fundraiser. There were more than 1,000 individual donors who had contributed to the cause, leaving comments along with their donations. There were a lot of comments thanking him for his help to take down Duke from fans of rival schools, however, there were others from Duke fans themselves wishing him well. Here’re some of the messages:
“Sorry about your home, friends and community in the Bahamas. THANK YOU FOR BEATING DUKE!
“I’m a Duke fan and we love winners.”
“Thanks for beating Duke! Go Tar Heels!”
“Thank you for doing the lords work last night. You and your offspring will never need to pay for a meal in Chapel Hill. Go Heels!!”
“Thank you for helping make history for the SFA Lumberjacks. An amazing moment!”
