This summer, watch as pine trees roll past your window and lily pads drift across the ponds below.

You’re on a bench in a train car on the Texas State Railroad, which left its station in Palestine, Texas.

Marvel at sweeping views of East Texas countryside through the train car’s wide windows.
Train rides are much more than a mode of transportation. Attractions like this one prioritize the experience, the tales of nature told through the viewing windows of the train car.

Not only that, but you’ll get to sit and travel in style, depending on which seating class you select.

Cheers to a trip by train this summer!

Stay Organized

Texas State Railroad has a depot in Palestine, Texas.

According to the railroad’s website, this ride delivers a bit of everything: history, nature, and adventure.

If your kids or your group of friends are looking for just that, this summer is your opportunity to make it a reality.

The full round-trip is about 4 hours — you’ll ride for approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes before stopping for a lunch break at the next depot.

Their regular season opens every March. Check out their excursions calendar for the latest events, dates, and times.

Be sure you’re on time to board your train.
The route is called the Piney Woods Route — and the name says it all, with pine trees stretching for miles in every direction.

Their train cars are refurbished yet retain much of their original character, and the fleet includes vintage steam and diesel locomotives.

One thing I love about this railroad is that their logo is a huge Lone Star. The font follows a Western theme. In other words, this isn’t the kind of luxury train ride you’d take through the Swiss Alps — it’s proudly, unmistakably Texan.

Keep in mind that a few factors may affect your experience, including the locomotive assigned for the day, passenger car arrangements, meal and layover timing, and departure and arrival times.

Texas State Railroad was named a 2022 Travelers’ Choice by Tripadvisor.

A closer look at the controls the conductor works during your ride.
Prices vary, so check their website for what seating classes, dates, and times are available. Find one within your budget!

The Palestine depot is their departure point. The second depot, in Rusk, is where they do layovers for their excursions.

Trains run on a strict schedule — no exceptions. There’s no one with a stopwatch chasing you down, but don’t push your luck either.

Trains leave at scheduled departure times and do not wait for any late arrivals. Try to get to the departure depot in Palestine at least 45 minutes before your train is supposed to leave.

Their excursions are round-trip between Palestine and Rusk. Trains take you from Palestine to Rusk and back to Palestine.

Take a minute to appreciate the train’s details. (Photo credit: William Diehl)

Always read the full description and rules of any excursion that you’re thinking about booking.

In Rusk, you’ll get off the train for about an hour and 15 minutes for most excursions. You’re free to go eat lunch, check out the grounds, or stop by the historical depot and gift shop.

I’d recommend taking this opportunity to get up, move around, and stretch — you’ll be glad you did.

Reserve your train ticket online, or call their reservations desk at 855-632-7729. You’ll get an email confirming your ticket purchase after you submit your reservation.

Be sure that you have your ticket confirmation email when you arrive at the Palestine depot. They accept mobile ticket confirmation emails. Just note that your confirmation email isn’t the same as your boarding pass.

Piney Woods Express Excursion tickets are fully refundable with a 72-hour notice. Any pre-paid lunches will also be refunded. If you miss your train, you can reschedule it within 14 days (subject to a rescheduling fee) and use the ticket credit (must be before December 31 of the same calendar year).

You can get a full refund for all other excursions, provided it’s within a 14-day notice. I’d suggest counting backwards on your calendar from the date of your train ride, so that you’re tracking the deadlines for canceling or rescheduling. It could save you from losing money on a last-minute cancellation.

If you happen to forget your confirmation email or can’t find it in your phone’s email inbox, have your photo ID ready (of whoever made the reservation), along with the credit card you used to book it.

Remember: your boarding pass and confirmation email are two separate things — make sure you have both ready on the day of your ride.

Take a seat on a bench for a peaceful train ride. (Photo credit: Traveling Nomad)

You’ll pick up your boarding passes at the Palestine depot. They’re not distributed digitally, so don’t expect an email in your inbox that’s your boarding pass.

You have to pick up your boarding passes no later than 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time. The same applies here as it did for late arrivals to boarding: Plan ahead, and allow for extra time.

It’s unfortunate, but if you do miss that 15-minute window to get your boarding passes, you’ll be automatically rescheduled for a new departure time and possibly a different date, along with applicable fees.

Save yourself and your party some troubles by getting everyone out the door on time.

Likewise, the boarding platform (doesn’t that sound so official?) closes 10 minutes before a train’s departure time.

No one is allowed on the boarding platform once that 10-minute window starts ticking. It’s for your safety!

A Ticket, Please!

Do I have to get a reservation?

Coordinating a group trip — especially with kids’ schedules and activities in the mix — isn’t easy. Getting everyone together, on the same day and time, requires significant effort, time, and coordinating.

But reservations are highly recommended here. Many of their excursions sell out in advance, which is no wonder since it’s such a cool, unique experience out in East Texas.

The property’s trees, lampposts, and depot set the mood. (Photo credit: Diane Beck)

Walk-ins are permitted, so don’t feel like you can’t get a seat if you walk in. There’s always the possibility you’ll be able to snag a bench, but it’s a risk.

If you do purchase a walk-in ticket, everyone in your group has to read and sign the Texas State Railroad Terms of Service and Condition of Sale Agreement and Consent/Indemnity Waiver. These waivers have to be signed before they’ll process your ticket payments and issue boarding passes.

Okay, how does train seating work? That’s an important question!

Every car class has a different seating layout, so it’s worth looking into which one suits your group before booking.

Most train cars have four people at each table. If you’re a party of two, you’ll likely be seated with another party of two. Don’t worry — if you’re short on couple friends, it’s actually a great chance to meet someone new who shares your taste for a good day trip.

If you have an odd number of people in your group, some people will be seated with another group. But they do their best to seat you in the same area as long as you’re all booked under the same reservation.

It’s not uncommon for several families to want to all meet up to try out an attraction like this that kids, parents, grandparents, or in-laws will love.

Next stop: the Rusk depot! (Photo credit: Keath Huff)

They can seat you together even if you’re from different families who booked online separately.

Just be sure to book your separate reservations in the same seating class. Also, make sure someone from your group calls the reservations desk at 855-632-7729 to confirm that you’d all like to sit together in the same car.

That way, an agent from the railroad can manually link up your reservations for seating purposes. Make sure to make this request by phone at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure time.

It’s required to sign release forms to ride the train, too. Anyone who’s over the age of 18 needs to sign their own release form. If you have any minors riding the train, their legal guardian must sign the release form.

Texas summers are hot, as we know. Anyone who’s grown up in Texas is used to the heat, often playing outside, sunscreen on, throwing back water. But if you’re newer to Texas, or used to cooler climates, it can be quite the adjustment.

Not all of the train cars are climate-controlled. That’s a big deal here in Texas during the summer. Call ahead to the reservations desk, and ask one of the agents about cars or seating classes that are preferable when temps rise.

Enjoy a view of lily pads atop a quiet pond.
One option is to look ahead at the months and dates in your family’s schedule. When will everyone be free? What’s a cooler time to go?

They do have restrooms on the train, which is a plus.

How can I get to the depot in Palestine? Plug in Texas State Railroad Palestine into your Maps app.

Where: Texas State Railroad Palestine Depot, 789 Park Road 70, Palestine, Texas 75801

Smoking isn’t allowed on any of the trains. This includes e-cigarettes, vapes, or anything similar.

You can’t take any outside food or drink on the train.

Outside food and drinks aren’t allowed on board, but there is a concession car available to all passengers. Check first if it’s part of the excursions you’re planning on booking.

To save a little money, grab a snack or finish your drink before boarding and leave the rest in your car.

Check out the railroad’s history board, capturing moments in time and fun facts.
The concession car offers a variety of non-alcoholic drinks, as well as beer, wine, and premium liquor service.

Snacks such as candy bars, ice cream, and popcorn (traditional train fare, of course) are available for purchase.

All guests have access to the concession car. Note that some seating classes include complimentary appetizers, served by a train car attendant right to your seat.

Fish, camp, and hike under towering trees in a state park near Texas State Highway 21.

You’ve entered Mission Tejas State Park in Grapeland, Texas.

Before you stretch 660 acres of peaceful pines at the north end of the Davy Crockett National Forest.

Halfway between Dallas and Houston, this park holds moments of history from early colonists. Keep an eye out for a log cabin or two along the way.

Historical landmarks set this state park apart. (Photo credit: Mission Tejas State Park)

Here’s what you need to know before you visit

Mission Tejas does have public restrooms, and dogs are allowed at the park. They have picnic tables for meals outdoors with the kids or a group of friends.

It’s managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and it’s open daily.

Always check the park’s official page for alerts before your visit — especially if you’re camping, hiking, or fishing with family.

Right now, there’s an alert for prescribed burns.

These occur from January to April, depending on the weather. Factor these prescribed burns — and the smoke they produce — into your plans.

To keep everyone safe and healthy, some camping areas, facilities, trails, and other spots are closed. Contact the park if you’d like to know specifics in order to plan your visit.

For the coordinates lovers out there (or the curious kid in your group!): the latitude is 31.541940, and the longitude is -95.233756.

Make reservations online through the park’s portal. Select a day pass or an overnight stay.

Hike along trails in the pines. (Photo credit: Mission Tejas State Park)

The portal is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The park does fill up at certain times of the year. To secure a spot, reserve day passes for weekends and holidays — and book any tours or activities well in advance.

This park’s busy seasons are spring, summer, and fall.

Note that you’ll need to pay all charges when you make a reservation. That includes any entrance fees. Same-day reservations aren’t refundable.

To make a reservation online, you’ll need to have these items ready: your email address, your home and work phone numbers, your RV, trailer, or mobile home lengths, and your credit card.

If you’d like to streamline check-in, go into your reservation portal, and enter the license plates of all vehicles that’ll be entering the park for your reservation.

Camp in the pines with your family or friends. (Photo credit: Mission Tejas State Park)

The reservations portal also offers a Spanish-language option.

The park has an option to reserve over the phone Monday-Friday during regular business hours. Group facilities, ADA sites, and a few park sites must be reserved over the phone. Pick a time window that works for your schedule!

Entrance fees are $4 daily for adults and free for kids 12 years old or under.

Restrooms at the park’s headquarters and the day-use area include accessible facilities such as parking and paved sidewalks.

There’s an accessible group picnic pavilion, with parking and a paved sidewalk leading up to the pavilion. They have a wheelchair-friendly ramp going from the restrooms to the pavilion, too.

Have a group coming? Reserve the pavilion for up to 80 people. It’s $25 daily. There’s water nearby, a playground, a projection screen, electricity, lights, a fire ring with a grill, 6 picnic tables, and a stand-up grill.

If you have a larger group, reserve the Mission San Francisco de los Tejas. It’ll fit 100 people. It can be rented, starting at $50, for weddings, etc. That’s a cost-effective solution to many pricier venues!

There are also primitive campsites that are harder to reach — better suited for those who don’t mind a hike in, limited parking, and no water or electricity on site.

Average rainfall at this park is 42.2 inches. Temperatures get as low as 35 degrees Fahrenheit in January, an average. On the flip side, temperatures rise as high as 95 degrees Fahrenheit (or higher, since it is Texas!), on average, in July.

Always check the weather forecast for the area, and take the necessary precautions — pack appropriate clothing and run through a safety checklist for you and your group.

Elevation is 167 to 552 feet, if you like facts and numbers!

Learn about historical moments as you discover more about the park. (Photo credit: Mission Tejas State Park)

Things to do at the park

You don’t need a license to fish here. Bring your own fishing gear, or you can borrow some fishing gear at the park.

There’s a small fishing pond near the picnic area. It’s a good option if you’d like somewhere you can set up easily and not have to go too far.

If you don’t mind a short hike, go fishing along San Pedro Creek with your kids or fishing buddies.

Fish along the creek for a day out in nature. (Photo credit: Mission Tejas State Park)

Is your kid more into Ranger programs? The park leads this program on Saturdays. Check their Events page for their most recent schedule.

They also offer guided tours for schools and other groups, as well as tours of historic landmarks within the park. Book these programs and tours before you arrive!

Or your kid could become a Junior Ranger at Mission Tejas! It’s time to make some memories.

In this Junior Ranger program, kids borrow an Explorer Pack that’s full of tools and complete tasks in a Junior Ranger Activity Journal (free of charge) to earn a badge.

Enjoy hiking through the pines? Mission Tejas has 8.5 miles of trails for you to explore.

Trails range from 10 minutes to 90 minutes. Go at your own pace, and communicate with your hiking friends about your plan before you set out.

Apply sunscreen, even though you’ll be beneath trees much of the time, and pack bug spray and water bottles. Know your limits (and those of your group), and wear proper clothing and hiking shoes.

Photo credit: Mission Tejas State Park

Photo credit: Mission Tejas State Park

Don’t forget water for your dog, too! Keep them on a leash within the park.

Wear a helmet when you’re riding a bike, and don’t count on your cell phone to have a signal on the trails. No motor vehicles are allowed on the trails.

Remember to store all of your trash in your backpack and not leave any on the ground in the park, too.

Stay on the trails, for your own safety. If you veer off, you’ll likely encounter harmful plants or animals. Leave all plants, animals (even the pocket-size ones!), and historical artifacts where they are. Rangers take care of those!

Ask to borrow a GPS unit at the park’s headquarters building, if you’d like to discover what people like so much about geocaching. Enjoy!

Camping in the park? Choose from 15 sites that have electricity and water, or from 2 sites that have water only. There are restrooms nearby with showers.

Cost is $10-15 nightly, but it depends on the season.

Thousands of years ago …

One of the coolest pieces of Mission Tejas is the history.

Let your kids tag along on a journey through history at this state park. (Photo credit: Robert thigpen)

In the 1600s, the Spanish traveled 2,500 miles from Mexico to Louisiana, passing through this very park, on a route called El Camino Real: The Royal Road. In the early 2000s, this road became known as El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail.

In the 1800s, a family built a log house nearby, which they later donated to the state of Texas.

Over the years, the park has been adapted, with some of these historical elements woven in. But visitors can still visit some of the historical places that’ve marked the past.

The first time I ever took a kayak out on a river, I felt freer than ever before. I felt strong, each stroke of the paddle sending me further, but also small amid the water, trees, and open sky. I found myself singing “Just Around the River Bend” from Disney’s Pocohantas for the first time in years.

You can capture a similar feeling when you explore the almost prehistoric, cypress-shaded sloughs where two large rivers meet at the edge of the heavily forested Big Thicket. This is Martin Dies, Jr. State Park.

Where The Park Is Located

Mist rises from the water as day dawns at Martin Dies, Jr. State Park. (Photo credit: Wikimedia Commons)

There’s So Much to Explore

Martin Dies, Jr. State Park consists of 705 acres of water, swamps, and forested land. It’s rich in wildlife and outdoor activities.

But before you start exploring, let’s review some park vocabulary. The park consists of three “units.” Each unit is an area of land with unique amenities.

The Hen House Ridge Unit to the south and the Walnut Ridge Unit to the north are separated by the B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir. Hen House Ridge has cabins, campsites, a designated swimming area, and a nature center.

Walnut Ridge Unit also has cabins as well as camping loops. The units are conveniently connected by Park Road 2.

The Cherokee Unit is sometimes considered part of the Walnut Ridge Unit. Also known as the Cherokee Day Use Area, it features boat ramps and paddling trails.

You’ll also see the term “slough” all over the park. Pronounced “sloo,” it refers to a muddy or swampy area. Sloughs are great for paddling, and campsites near sloughs offer direct, if muddy, access to the water.

Paddling Martin Dies Jr. State Park

Travel influencers have called the park a “boater’s paradise” because of the readily available canoe and kayak rentals and dedicated paddling trails in the Cherokee Day Use area.

Three marked routes total nearly fourteen miles kayak trails. On the Walnut Slough Trail, you’ll glide through 4.3 miles of towering bald cypress forests, winking between open water and shaded passages.

POV: You could be here, on this kayak. (Photo credit: Jamie J)

Sandy Creek contains 4.9 miles of slow-moving water. This route is perfect for beginners, as it does not require shuttle or portage—that is, you don’t have to leave a vehicle at the end to drive back to the beginning, nor do you have to carry your kayak over land. The area is also rich in wildlife.

Gliding silently over the water, the waterlogged trees and hanging plants make it feel like you’ve entered an ancient world. (Photo credit: Larry P)

For a more adventurous day on the water, check out the Neches Paddling Trail. Buoys will guide you through the faster currents of the Neches River. You can choose to paddle as little as 3.2 miles or as much as 16 miles.

The Neches is the park’s most challenging as well as most rewarding paddling experience. Depending on conditions and how much you explore, expect the longer journey to take two to eight hours, and pack accordingly.

Fishing in the Park

In addition to kayaking, you can explore the waterways by paddleboard. If you bring along the right gear, the fishing can’t be beat. You might bring home a haul of largemouth bass, six other bass species, blue catfish, channel catfish, crappie, and various species of perch, including sunfish.

The deeper waters of the B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir have produced especially large blue catfish up to 41 inches in length.

You might catch a monster catfish like this one. (Photo credit: NOAA via Wikimedia Commons)

There are boat ramps on the Neches and Angelina rivers, but you don’t need a boat or a board to fish from. The park contains fishing piers in the Hen House Ridge Unit, and bank fishing is also popular. Lighted piers allow convenient use even after dark.

Fishing licenses are not required within the park when fishing from the banks or piers.

And, if you’d like to clean and cook your catch, you can. Barbecue grills are available near the park headquarters and Forest Trailhead.

Other Activities to Enjoy

We drew you in with promises of a kayaker’s paradise, but there’s plenty for land lubbers to enjoy as well.

The park contains more than seven miles of hiking trails. If you just want to look at the water without getting out on it, the Island trail offers stunning lake views.

Maps and trail markers make the park easy to navigate.
The 2.2-mile Slough Trail crosses sixteen bridges, providing an on-the-water experience without a kayak. If the forest is more your speed, check out the Forest, Whitetail, and Wildlife Trails.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="750" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/image-12.jpg" alt="POV shot of kayaking in the park’s 14‑mile trail captures the peaceful beauty of the water.

In the heat of summer, the calm waters are inviting to swimmers. The Hen House Ridge Unit has a designated swimming area. Enjoy your swim, but exercise due caution: no lifeguards are present, but alligators may be.

Speaking of wildlife, many species can be observed in the park, often from the comfort of your kayak. You might see white-tailed deer, raccoons, opossums, foxes, bobcats, or armadillos.

Birders can keep an eye and ear peeled for pileated woodpeckers, anhingas, herons, and egrets. There are also alligators and previously mentioned, and snakes including timber rattlers and coral snakes.

Ecologically, the park is truly unique. It has been called a “legendary biological crossroads where eastern forests, Gulf Coast prairies, and southwestern deserts blend into something found nowhere else on Earth.”

Finally, as your day draws to a close, don’t forget to look up. The park’s distance from big cities provides a dark sky environment that is ideal for stargazing.

After dark, don’t forget to look up.
Check the park’s calendar for stargazing events. Rangers host events where you may learn to identify constellations or experience a rare sight invisible in urban areas.

Staying Overnight in the Park

Martin Dies Jr. State Park provides ample opportunities for exciting day trips, but it can also be an overnight destination—especially if you crave more paddling or fishing than a single day can hold.

You can choose your own adventure and your level of amenities: basic tent sites, electric and water hookups for campers, and screened shelters and cabins are available.

There’s too much to do to fit it all in one day.
More than 200 campsites are available. Many have lake access.

Guided Tours

If you’d prefer a knowledgeable guide on your adventures, the park hosts a number of ranger programs. You can check the Events page of the Texas Parks and Wildlife official website for day hikes, night hikes, paddling tours, star parties, geocaching, and more.

The Nature Center in the Hen House Ridge Unit hosts frequent activities for all ages. Kids can pick up a free Junior Ranger Activity Journal at the park headquarters and complete tasks to earn a badge.

They can also borrow a Junior Rangers Explorer Pack loaded with binoculars, a magnifying glass, an animal tracking key, a pencil, crayons, watercolors, a journal, a sketchbook, and guides to wildflowers, trees, birds, butterflies, and rocks.

If they love the Explorer Pack, your little adventurer can take home a Mini Explorer Pack from the park store. This will allow them to keep exploring nature in their own backyard and beyond.

Why Such a Morbid Name?

When I first laid eyes on the “Martin Dies” sign, it was startling. It almost seemed like a threat to anyone named Martin! I knew there must be a story behind it, and I was determined to track it down.

The signage for Martin Dies Jr. State Park welcomes visitors to this nature‑filled retreat. (Photo Credit: Yiyis PP)

The park got its start in 1964, when the state leased parkland from the United States Army Corps of Engineers. In 1965, it opened under the name Dam B State Park.

Later that same year, the park was renamed in honor of State Senator Martin Dies, Jr. He had been serving in the Texas Senate since 1959. Before that, he and his father had served in law and politics.

So, no one died to give this park its name. In fact, its namesake lived on until 2001.

How to Get There

Martin Dies, Jr. State Park is located along U.S. Route 190 in Jasper and Tyler counties.
When you think of scuba diving, your mind probably goes to vibrant coral reefs and tropical fish glimmering in the water, or perhaps a sea…

When you think of scuba diving, your mind probably goes to vibrant coral reefs and tropical fish glimmering in the water, or perhaps a sea turtle casually drifting through the waves. As a Texan, scuba diving makes me think of the Gulf Coast, where underwater exploration is possible. It doesn’t, however, make me think about a former clay quarry an hour southeast of Dallas.

But Athens Scuba Park in Athens, Texas, has turned that old quarry into an underwater playground with sunken jets, boats, and even a country music legend’s tour bus resting on the bottom—all ripe for exploring via scuba diving.

The spring-fed water offers visibility that can reach up to 70 feet, making it, surprisingly, one of the clearest places to dive in Texas.

What’s more, Athens Scuba Park is an all‑in‑one setup. It combines a full dive shop, classroom, training pool, and open‑water lake on one property.

This makes it one of the largest training facilities in the Southwest, where divers can go from complete beginners to certified without leaving the site.

Where is the Athens Scuba Park Located?

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/image-1-1024x768.jpg" alt="An aerial view of Athens Scuba Park shows calm waters hiding incredible underwater wonders.

Athens Scuba Park sits at 500 N Murchison Street in Athens, Texas, just half a mile from the charming town square.

The park lies approximately 75 miles southeast of Dallas, making it an easy day trip or weekend escape for the metroplex’s millions of residents.

Cedar Creek Reservoir rests about 24 miles to the west, adding another outdoor recreation option for visitors exploring the region.

The Underwater Attractions

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="660" height="440" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/image-2.jpg" alt="One of the sunken planes in the lake awaits scuba divers exploring beneath the surface.

With more than two dozen wrecks to explore plus 10 to 12 diving docks and platforms positioned around the lake, divers can spend multiple visits exploring without seeing everything twice.

The star attraction is the Lockheed C-140 Jetstar, a 75-foot military transport jet that dominates the underwater landscape. Dive through the jet and see where the cockpit, passenger seating, and the engine were.

There’s also a 60-foot Hawker 600 Jet that rests nearby, along with three sunken sailboats ranging from 30 to 45 feet, three cabin cruisers, sixteen speed boats, fourteen small fishing boats, and nine motorcycles scattered across the bottom. Don’t forget to drift by the DART bus from Dallas Area Rapid Transit that sits submerged alongside a golf cart, a space capsule replica, and even an Iron Man suit added in recent years.

The front of a sunken plane in the lake creates a surreal underwater sight for divers.

The wrecks also include remarkable pieces of pop culture history. Country music star and native Texan Ray Price’s broken-down tour bus found its final resting place here, as did the triple-decker party barge used by Clint Eastwood’s film crew.

For those seeking overhead diving practice, a five-foot culvert called the “Black Hole” simulates an underwater cave, stretching 40 feet before emerging into a deeper pond.

The Diving Experience

An underwater selfie captures two divers fully geared up beneath the lake’s surface.

Athens Scuba Park offers remarkable clarity, with visibility averaging 35 feet and sometimes reaching 70.

The clay’s pH keeps algae growth low, so the water stays clean, though marine life is limited mostly to crawfish.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="696" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/image-7-1024x696.jpg" alt="A group of divers gathers at the surface of the lake, preparing for their descent.

Depths range from 20 to 35 feet across the 8‑acre lake, giving beginners shallow platforms to practice and advanced divers wrecks, night dives, and navigation challenges.

The relatively shallow depth also allows longer bottom times without decompression concerns.

Beyond Diving

Non-divers and snorkelers can find plenty to enjoy. The shallow areas allow snorkelers and free divers to reach many wrecks with ease, and 35-foot visibility means you can see attractions from the surface on clear days.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/image-5-1024x576.jpg" alt="Kayaks are available for rent, offering a relaxing alternative for those not scuba diving.
Free kayak rentals come included with admission, and floating with a cold drink on a sunny Texas afternoon requires no certification.

The park offers tent camping and RV sites with electrical hookups for extended stays. Volleyball courts provide land-based recreation, and select weekends feature live music.

Night diving and camping are available on Friday and Saturday nights with advance reservations.

Entry fees run approximately $30 per person, with certified divers bringing their own gear paying around $20.

Camping costs roughly $10 per person, while RV sites range from $40 to $50 per night. Training courses span $125 to $300 based on certification level.

The dive shop rents everything from tanks and regulators to wetsuits and fins, and air fills are available on-site.

Between Houston and the Louisiana border, Village Creek winds through the Big Thicket—one of the most biologically diverse regions outside the tropics.

Its tea‑colored waters, fed only by rainfall and springs, reflect bald cypress and tupelo trees that have shaded these banks for generations.

Just outside Lumberton, the park feels worlds away from civilization.

Paddlers slip into a landscape of beaver, otter, and wood ducks, where the only sounds are birdsong and the splash of turtles sliding into the creek.

It’s one of the easiest ways to step into the primeval character of the Big Thicket.

The Village Creek Paddling Trail

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="562" height="1000" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-264.jpg" alt="The creek’s calm waters reflect the trees, offering a peaceful view in the heart of the park.

The Village Creek Paddling Trail winds for 21 miles through the Big Thicket, with the state park serving as its southernmost access point.

Five launch sites—FM 418 near Kountze, Highway 327, Baby Galvez Landing, US 96, and the park’s own canoe launch—let paddlers choose their distance.

The creek runs flat and slow, making it beginner‑friendly, with segments lasting two to five hours depending on water levels.

The full trail is best tackled over multiple days, with free camping permits available from the Big Thicket National Preserve Visitor Center.

Fed entirely by rainfall, Village Creek remains untouched by dams or impoundments.

Fallen trees, submerged logs, and overhanging limbs provide the main challenges, while summer’s low water reveals a white sandy bottom.

Sandbars emerge as natural rest stops—perfect for swimming, picnics, or simply soaking in the quiet of the Big Thicket.

A Forest Unlike Any Other in Texas

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="667" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-265.jpg" alt="The Tupelo Trail winds through enchanting forest, inviting hikers into a magical landscape.

The Big Thicket earns its “biological crossroads” title because ecosystems collide here in remarkable ways.

Bald cypress draped in Spanish moss grows within sight of prickly pear cactus, while longleaf pines tower over carnivorous sundews.

Within the park’s 2,500 acres, visitors encounter bottomland hardwood forest, cypress swamps, tupelo wetlands, and sandy uplands—sometimes all on a single trail.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="1000" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-268.jpg" alt="The Pineywoods of Village Creek State Park showcase towering trees and lush greenery.

Wildlife thrives in this diversity. Village Creek State Park hosts 64 documented bird species, from kingfishers and wood ducks to herons and egrets, while the broader Big Thicket region supports more than 200.

On land and water, sightings might include deer, beaver, otter, bobcats, armadillos, and turtles.

Alligators are common in the Neches River watershed, but rarely appear here—the cooler spring‑fed waters of Village Creek keep them at bay.

Eight Miles of Trails

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="750" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-261.jpg" alt="Wooden signs along the trails point the way, guiding hikers through the forest paths.

Village Creek State Park offers eight miles of trails for hiking and biking.

Options range from the easy Lil’ Paws Nature Trail to the longer Water Oak Trail, which crosses sandy uplands and swampy lowlands.

The River Birch‑Beechwood Loop provides a short, accessible forest walk, while the Village Creek Trail leads a mile to a sandbar swimming area in the Willard Lake section of the creek.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="750" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-262.jpg" alt="One of the trails features a clear path with a wooden bridge, surrounded by nature’s calm beauty.

Rain is frequent in this part of Texas, so trails can get muddy, especially in spring.

The wet conditions sustain the park’s swamp ecosystems, but hikers should come prepared for slick paths and damp terrain.

Camping Along the Creek

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="667" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-263.jpg" alt="Campsites along the creek are shaded by trees and include firepits for cozy evenings outdoors.

Village Creek State Park offers several overnight options.

Twenty‑five campsites with water and electric hookups accommodate both RVs and tents, each equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and grill, plus access to restrooms, showers, and a dump station.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="750" height="1000" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-267.jpg" alt="RV campsites are spacious and well-kept, complete with picnic tables for convenience.

For a more rugged stay, about 15 primitive walk‑in sites sit along the creek, requiring a short hike from parking.

At the other end of the spectrum, an eight‑person cabin provides heat, air conditioning, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a deck with a fire ring overlooking the forest.

Watercraft Rentals and Programs

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="667" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-266.jpg" alt="Another view of the creek shows a swimming area where visitors can cool off in nature.

The park rents standup paddleboards, one- and two-person kayaks, and canoes daily from 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM, weather and water conditions permitting.

Life jackets are provided. Several private outfitters in the area also offer rentals and shuttle services for longer paddling trips.

Fishing requires no license when casting from shore within any Texas state park.

The park loans fishing tackle for use on-site, making it easy to try your luck with the catfish, bass, crappie, and sunfish that inhabit the creek.

Ranger-led programs run throughout the year, including guided nature hikes, night hikes, campfire talks, and stargazing sessions.

The nature center offers exhibits on the Big Thicket ecosystem and hands-on discovery activities. Junior Ranger Explorer Packs are available for young visitors.

Village Creek State Park is open daily from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The park often reaches capacity, and reservations are strongly recommended for both camping and day use, particularly between February and September.

Day use entry costs $4 per person for ages 13 and older; children 12 and under enter free.

The park has experienced hurricane damage in recent years, and some facilities may have limited availability.

A friend recently called upon my travel expertise to find a beachfront hotel for Fourth of July weekend—but on a budget. With peak-season prices spiking…

A friend recently called upon my travel expertise to find a beachfront hotel for Fourth of July weekend—but on a budget. With peak-season prices spiking at hundreds of dollars a night, I immediately suggested an alternative: waterfront camping.

If you’re staying in Texas this summer, you don’t have to drop hundreds on a hotel or thousands on a lakehouse. You can opt for scenic waterside camping for just $20 a night at Purtis Creek State Park!

The wooden signage at Purtis Creek State Park, surrounded by trees and welcoming visitors to a day or a stay in the great outdoors. (Photo credit: Maria Rosenberg)

Things to Do at Purtis Creek

There are so many things to do at Purtis Creek State Park, a recreational lake surrounded by pine and hardwood forests. It only makes sense to stay an extra day—or three!

Fishing is one of the most sought-after activities at Purtis Creek. The 355-acre bass-stocked lake is famous for its catch-and-release policies that result in massive trophy fish. Fishing for largemouth bass is limited to catch and release for any fish over 16 inches, allowing them to thrive and grow.

At Purtis Creek, you can catch and take pictures, then release them for others to enjoy. (Photo credit: Scott Gardner)

Largemouth bass exceeding 24 inches are not uncommon—they may be temporarily retained in a livewell to be weighed and photographed.

There are plenty of species that can be retained within the daily limits: catfish, crappie, bluegill, and sand bass, for example. Smallmouth bass must be at least 14 inches, and there is no minimum length for common carp or Alabama, Guadeloupe, or spotted bass, with a daily bag limit of 5 black bass species.

For white bass, the minimum length is 10 inches, and the daily bag limit is 25. Striped bass have a minimum length of 18 inches and a bag limit of five.

Rainbow and brown trout have no size limit but a daily bag limit of five. There are no limitations on sunfish, bluegill, redear, or warmouth.

There are no limits on the number of sunfish species you can take in a day; their mild, sweet, flaky meat is considered excellent eating. (Photo credit: Pixabay)

For blue and channel catfish, you can take 25 daily, but only 10 can be 20 inches or longer. Flathead catfish have a minimum length of 18 inches and a daily bag limit of 5.

White and black crappie have a minimum length of 10 inches and a daily bag limit of 25. There is a daily bag limit of one for alligator gar, but no limits on other gar species. When you harvest alligator gar, you must report it via the Texas Hunt & Fish app; gar fishing may temporarily close during spawning season.

No fishing license is required when fishing from the banks or piers within the park.

Want to fish but don’t have the gear? Ask about free fishing equipment loaners—rods, reels, and tackle boxes—at the Ranger Station. Watercraft rentals are also available. Frozen bait and live worms are available at the park store.

A fish cleaning facility is available so you can enjoy your catch the same day.

Fish without a license from the banks or one of two rustic wooden fishing piers.
You can beat the heat by taking a swim in the designated swimming area.

There are surfaced roads and trails for biking, as well as hiking and nature/interpretive trails. Purtis Creek has more than seven miles of trails, abundant with wildlife sightings.

The Wolfpen Hike and Bike Trail stretches 4.1 miles across three forested loops—green, blue, and red—with lake views and a quirky landmark: a tree bent at a perfect 90‑degree angle.

Purtis Creek’s hiking trails are designed to be accessible, even if you need an all-terrain wheelchair.
The Beaver Slide Nature Path runs 1.7 miles along the lakeshore, crossing bridges and passing a bird blind where patient visitors can spot herons, woodpeckers, warblers, and more than 100 documented species. It is also home to the primitive campsites.

Finally, there is the Solar Trail, a half-mile walkway across the dam, with planet markers spaced to scale from the sun. From Pluto’s sign—the trail was installed while Pluto was still a full-fledged planet—the sun marker is barely invisible, underscoring the vastness of the natural universe.

A map of the park includes fishing guides, trail etiquette, and helpful visitor information.
Families can enjoy the picnic area and playground. There’s also a park store to furnish the day’s necessities and maybe a souvenir.

Occasionally, special events are held at the Amphitheater. Check the events calendar for paddling classes, guided hikes, bow hunting demonstrations, and more.

Kids can borrow a Junior Ranger pack containing nature guides, a magnifying glass, binoculars, a journal, a sketchbook, and more from the park store.

A Brief History of Purtis Creek State Park

From its inception, Purtis Creek State Park was designed as a haven for fishing enthusiasts.

Texas Parks and Wildlife acquired the land in 1977. In 1980, the dam was built, which caused the formation of the lake. The park itself opened in 1988.

The creek’s calm waters invite kayakers for a peaceful paddle.
Booking Your Campsite

Two camping options are available: Campsites with Electricity and Hike-in Primitive Campsites.

Campsites with Electricity are the most popular option. You can choose from 56 sites. Each site can house eight people.

Campsites with Electricity are equipped with picnic tables, water and electrical hookups, a lantern post, and nearby restrooms with showers.

The thirteen Primitive Campsites are located on a 1.7-mile loop, meaning you’ll hike at least 0.65 miles to get to your site. These campsites accommodate up to 4 people.

You’ll have to bring your own drinking water, as none is available at the site. You can cook your meals using the fire ring with a grill. A chemical toilet is available.

Visitors have noted that the camp sites are well laid out, so that your neighbors are not too close for comfort.

You can reserve your campsite online using a credit card. Campsites with electricity are $20 nightly plus a daily entrance fee. Primitive Campsites are $10 nightly plus the daily entrance fee.

Pro tip: Sites 21 through 23 are sought-after for their lakefront views. Site E is a local favorite due to its extra privacy. Weekday stays afford more solitude.

Reservations open five months ahead of time and often fill up quickly, especially for weekends and holidays. Campsites can be reserved for a maximum of 14 consecutive days.

If you have a Texas State Park Pass, the daily entrance fees will be waived. As of April 2026, the day use fee is $5.00 per day, per person aged 13 and older. Check the park’s website for the latest fee information.

Did you know? If you bring your boat for a day on the water and decide to stay overnight, you can purchase a non-camping night activity use fee. Enjoy your evening on the lake, but remember that quiet hours are enforced after 10 pm.

Your fun doesn’t have to end when the park closes, and the sun goes down, whether you’re camping or using a night activity pass.
Fishing Made Accessible

If you didn’t grow up fishing, breaking into the sport may seem daunting. But Purtis Creek State Park aims to make this enjoyable, relaxing activity more accessible to everyone.

As mentioned above, you don’t need a fishing license to fish from the banks or piers at Purtis Creek. That’s one red tape hurdle cleared.

Second, you don’t need to buy expensive gear. You can borrow a rod, reel, and tackle box from park staff. If you want to use live or frozen bait, you can purchase it conveniently at the park store.

Third, you don’t need a boat. You can fish from the bank or fishing piers, where you’re likely to meet some helpful folks who are willing to show you the ropes.

If you do want to get out on the water, kayak rentals are available. Each one comes with a life jacket and a paddle.

Park regulations also ensure that the environs is peaceful. Only 50 motorized boats are allowed on the lake at a time, and they must adhere to an “idle only” speed limit with a strict no-wake policy. This means you won’t have speedboats screaming by, stirring up the water, and scaring the fish.

The park also makes night fishing available, even to non-campers, for a $2 overnight permit.

Things to Note About Camping at Purtis Creek

If you’re bringing a motorized boat, get to the water early. As mentioned previously, only 50 motorized boats are allowed on the lake at any given time. Slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

For visitors with mobility needs, the park can provide an all-terrain wheelchair upon request, ensuring that the trails can be enjoyed by all.

A parkgoer uses a GRIT Freedom chair with 26-inch mountain bike tires.
Pets are welcome at Purtis Creek State Park, but they must be restricted by a six-foot leash, crate, or otherwise controlled at all times. Pets are not allowed in State Park buildings, including restrooms and cabins, or around designated swimming areas. Remember to clean up after your pet!

Many visitors have noted the cleanliness of the park, especially the playground and restrooms. One noted that hanging your trash isn’t enough to keep wildlife like raccoons from accessing it; they recommended utilizing the provided dumpsters before turning in each night.

How to Get There

If you want to beat the crowds and rising prices, Purtis Creek State Park is the place to go. It is located about 60 miles southeast of Dallas.

If you’re driving in from Dallas, take Highway 175 South to Eustace, then turn left on FM 316 North. You’ll see the park entrance in a little over three miles. You can also use the map below to navigate to Purtis Creek State Park.

Where: 14225 FM 316 N, Eustace, TX 75124

The park is open daily from 6 am to 10 pm. Office hours are 8:15 am to 4:45 pm.

Before, during, or after your stay, stop by the restaurants or museums in nearby Athens, an 18 minute drive from the park. The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center showcases aquatic animals and the sport of fishing.

Purtis Creek State Park is a rewarding destination for those who value good fishing and quiet getaways. Outdoor memories are waiting to be made at Purtis Creek State Park.

Houston sprawls in every direction, a concrete maze of freeways and strip malls that can make you forget Texas has forests at all.

But drive an hour north on I-45, and the landscape changes completely. Pine trees rise on either side of the road. The air smells different.

And then you turn onto Park Road 40 and enter Huntsville State Park, a 2,083-acre wooded retreat centered around a 210-acre lake that feels like it belongs in the Appalachians, not within easy reach of the nation’s fourth-largest city.

This is not a rugged backcountry destination—it’s a well-developed, family-friendly park with campgrounds, picnic areas, kayak rentals, and a swimming beach.

But it’s also genuinely beautiful, filled with tall loblolly and shortleaf pines, southern red oaks, and flowering dogwoods that bloom in spring.

Lake Raven: The Heart of the Park

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-134-1024x576.jpg" alt="Lake Raven at Huntsville State Park offers calm waters perfect for kayaking and peaceful escapes.

Everything at Huntsville State Park radiates outward from Lake Raven, a 210-acre reservoir created when CCC workers dammed Big Chinquapin and Little Chinquapin Creeks in the late 1930s.

The lake takes its name from Sam Houston himself—”Colonel,” meaning “The Raven,” was the name given to him by the Cherokee people who adopted him as a young man.

The lake’s size limits it to wakeless speeds, which keeps the water calm and the atmosphere peaceful. Motorboats are allowed but must operate at idle speed only.

This makes Lake Raven ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding—you can rent equipment near Raven Lodge through self-service kayak rentals.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-138-1024x768.jpg" alt="Kayaking across Lake Raven lets visitors glide through serene waters surrounded by nature.

The calm water suits beginning paddlers perfectly, and the shoreline offers plenty of shaded coves to explore.

Fishing runs strong here. The park provides a boat ramp, multiple fishing piers, and fish cleaning stations.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/image-137-1024x768.jpg" alt="A boat ramp on Lake Raven provides easy access for fishing and boating adventures.

No Texas fishing license is required when fishing from the shore within state park boundaries (though standard length and bag limits still apply).

A designated swimming area near the park store opens from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. during warm months.

There’s a sandy beach, roped swimming boundaries, and a floating platform for jumping—but no lifeguards, so swim at your own risk.

The park store, Gator Junction, sells camping and fishing supplies, snacks, ice cream, and souvenirs.

In the quiet corner of Northeast Texas, far from the crowds of the Hill Country or the bustle of big-city parks, sits a hidden gem that feels almost too good to be true.

Lake Bob Sandlin State Park, a 640-acre retreat near Pittsburg, offers serene shoreline views, shaded trails beneath towering pines, and the kind of peaceful atmosphere that makes you forget the outside world.

Even better, it’s one of the most affordable scenic escapes in Texas, with a day pass costing only about five dollars.

For travelers seeking solitude and beauty without breaking the bank, this park is a dream come true.

Where Lake Bob Sandlin State Park Is Located

Lake Bob Sandlin State Park is nestled in the Piney Woods of East Texas, surrounded by dense forests of pine and hardwood that frame the shimmering waters of the lake.

Just outside the small town of Pittsburg, the park feels secluded yet remains easily accessible by road.

Unlike the more famous Texas lake parks, this one flies under the radar, making it a perfect destination for those who prefer calm over crowds.

The rural setting adds to its charm, offering visitors a chance to slow down and reconnect with nature in a place that feels worlds away from city life.

Surreal Lake and Forest Views

The park’s greatest treasure is its scenery. Along the shoreline, expansive lake vistas stretch out beneath the sky, with quiet coves and reflective waters creating postcard-worthy moments.

Sunrise paints the lake in soft gold, while sunset casts a fiery glow across the horizon, making every visit feel cinematic.

Beyond the water, the Piney Woods landscape adds its own magic.

Tall pines rise above a mixed forest canopy, trails wind through mossy ground, and seasonal changes bring bursts of color—from spring wildflowers to autumn foliage.

Misty mornings often blanket the park in a dreamlike haze, turning even a short walk into something unforgettable.

For those who love to explore, Lake Bob Sandlin offers easy scenic trails that loop through forest and lakeshore.

With minimal elevation gain, they’re perfect for casual walkers, families, or anyone looking for a gentle hike. The park also caters to anglers and paddlers.

Lake Bob Sandlin is known for bass and catfish, and fishing piers provide convenient access for casting a line.

The calm waters are ideal for kayaking and canoeing, giving visitors a chance to glide across the lake and soak in the views from a different perspective.

Whether you’re hiking, fishing, or simply sitting by the water, the park invites you to slow down and savor the outdoors.

One of the most appealing aspects of Lake Bob Sandlin State Park is its affordability. With a day-use fee of about five dollars per adult, it ranks among the lowest-cost state parks in Texas.

That small price unlocks a wealth of natural beauty, making it one of the best values for outdoor recreation in the state.

Timing your visit can enhance the experience even more.

Fall brings crisp air and vibrant foliage, spring offers lush greenery and wildflowers, and weekdays provide maximum solitude for those who want the trails and shoreline almost to themselves.

From a distance, the cabin barely exists. Its mirrored walls catch the pine trees, the sky, the shifting clouds, and throw them back at you.

Walk closer, and the structure slowly reveals itself—a rectangular box of industrial glass and steel, suspended between the visible world and its reflection.

This is the ÖÖD Mirror House at Cameron Ranch Glamping, tucked into 11 private acres of East Texas forest near Lake Livingston.

It’s one of the most visually striking places to stay in the state: a 221-square-foot prefabricated cabin designed in Estonia and installed in the pine woods about an hour north of Houston.

The architecture disappears into nature. You don’t.

Where the Mirror House Is Located

Cameron Ranch Glamping operates two Texas locations—one near Lake Bastrop, close to Austin, and this original property near Coldspring in San Jacinto County.

The Mirror House sits on the Coldspring acreage, positioned above Huffman’s Creek in a landscape of tall pines and dense East Texas woodland.

Lake Livingston, the second-largest lake in Texas, lies about ten minutes away. Sam Houston National Forest—one of only four national forests in the state—is equally close.

The setting is genuinely rural: no nearby commercial development, no visible neighbors, no traffic sounds. Forest noises replace city ones.

Inside the Mirror House

The interior is minimalist by design, keeping focus on the forest framed through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

A memory foam queen bed anchors the sleeping area, positioned so you can watch the trees (and spot passing deer) from under the covers.

A 32-inch Roku TV with Starlink Wi-Fi is available, though the point is really to watch what’s outside.

The kitchenette includes a two-burner electric stove, microwave, mini-fridge, Keurig coffee maker with assorted pods, electric kettle, plates, utensils, and cups.

Climate control keeps the space comfortable regardless of season—air conditioning for brutal Texas summers, heating for winter stays. Plush linens, robes, and upscale toiletries add hotel-level touches.

A private bathroom with a shower completes the interior.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/mirror-house-bath-1024x682.jpg" alt="Private bathroom inside the Mirror House with a shower and toilet.
Outdoor Amenities

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/mirror-house-sauna-1024x682.jpg" alt="Your very own private sauna at the Mirror House—because relaxation here is taken seriously.

The real luxury at the Mirror House happens outside. A mirror-clad Nordic sauna sits near the main cabin—wood-fired, requiring some fire-starting skills but deeply rewarding.

A massive outdoor bathtub and rainforest shower provide open-air bathing surrounded by trees. A yoga deck overlooks the forest. A fire pit comes stocked with wood and starters.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/mirror-house-outdoor-area-1024x682.jpg" alt="Outdoor space of the Mirror House—complete with a soaking tub, bonfire area, swing, and total immersion in nature.

Beyond the cabin’s private area, guests share access to a one-acre catch-and-release fishing pond with the property’s Geo Dome accommodation.

Outdoor cooking options include a propane grill, pizza oven (with two propane tanks provided), and charcoal grill. Yard games and outdoor seating complete the setup.

The property is pet-friendly, welcoming one to two dogs for a $49 per-pet fee.

Who It’s For

The Mirror House sleeps two guests maximum—this is a couple’s retreat or solo escape, not a family vacation.

The design caters to romantic getaways, girlfriends’ retreats, solo nature therapy, and small yoga or meditation groups.

The cabin is Instagram-famous and frequently photographed, which means availability can be tight.

Dynamic pricing starts around $299 per night and increases on weekends. Two-night minimums typically apply for weekend stays.

Booking requires a 50 percent non-refundable deposit, with the remaining balance due 14 days before check-in.

Planning Your Visit

Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for enjoying the outdoor sauna and bathtub. Winter brings crisp forest air and quieter bookings.

Summer in East Texas is hot and humid, though the climate-controlled cabin and optional cold plunge in the outdoor tub provide relief.

Burn bans are common in dry Texas conditions and may restrict wood fires during your stay—in which case the propane fire pit and charcoal grill remain available.

The nearest attractions include Lake Livingston State Park (18 minutes), Sam Houston National Forest trails (10 minutes), and Big Thicket National Preserve.

Double Lake Recreation Area is about 26 minutes away. Houston’s amenities are an hour south.

Note: There is no kitchen inside the cabin—the kitchenette is designed for light prep and reheating, not full cooking. Plan meals accordingly or use the outdoor grills and pizza oven.

Where the Forest Reflects Back

The Mirror House at Cameron Ranch offers something genuinely rare: architecture that subtracts from the landscape rather than adding to it.

You wake up surrounded by trees that seem to continue right through the walls. You soak in an outdoor tub watching pines sway overhead.

The cabin exists to disappear—and in its absence, the forest becomes everything.

If you’ve ever wished you could have a Texas state park practically to yourself, Fort Boggy might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Tucked into the rolling piney woods between Houston and Dallas, this 1,847-acre park flies under the radar while bigger, flashier parks draw the crowds.

Fort Boggy offers something increasingly rare in the state park system: genuine solitude, a beautiful 15-acre lake, and just five primitive hike-in campsites for those who want to sleep under the stars without neighbors on every side.

It’s back-to-basics camping in a place that feels remarkably unchanged from how it looked when settlers first arrived in the 1840s.

Where Fort Boggy Is Located

A serene view of the lake by the picnic area at Fort Boggy State Park—peaceful, shaded, and perfect for slowing down.

The park sits near Centerville in Leon County, almost exactly halfway between Houston and Dallas along Interstate 45.

That makes it roughly ninety minutes from either city—close enough for a weekend escape but far enough from the interstate that you won’t hear traffic from your campsite.

The landscape here is classic East Texas: rolling hills covered in post oaks and loblolly pines, open meadows dotted with wildflowers in spring, and wetlands that attract an impressive variety of birds.

The Five Exclusive Campsites

One of the cabins at Fort Boggy State Park—ideal for groups or for those who prefer a roof over primitive camping.

Fort Boggy intentionally keeps its overnight options limited. The park offers just five primitive hike-in campsites, plus five rustic cabins for those who want a roof over their heads.

That’s it.

No RV hookups, no sprawling campground loops, no generators humming through the night. The authorities want this park to remain true to how nature intended it.

The primitive sites require a hike of up to one mile from the trailhead, which means you’ll need to carry everything in.

Each site accommodates up to eight people and comes equipped with a fire ring, lantern post, and picnic table—the essentials and nothing more.

There’s no electricity or running water at the sites. You’ll pack out everything you bring in.

For experienced campers who value solitude over amenities, these are among the most peaceful overnight options in any Texas state park.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://txheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/fort-boggy-trail-1024x683.jpg" alt="The hiking nature trail at Fort Boggy State Park offers a quiet walk through trees and wetlands.

The sites are spaced far enough apart that you won’t be sharing your evening with strangers.

On weekdays, especially, you might have the entire primitive camping area to yourself. That kind of quiet is hard to find anymore.

The Lake and What You Can Do There

Sullivan Lake is the heart of Fort Boggy, a fifteen-acre jewel fringed with oaks and other hardwoods.

It’s small enough to feel intimate but big enough for a proper paddle around. The lake operates as a no-wake zone, which means no jet skis or speedboats—just the quiet splash of kayaks, canoes, and small fishing boats.

Another view of Fort Boggy’s calm lake, where visitors can rent kayaks and enjoy an easy paddle. Credit: Jim Holland via Facebook

Fishing is excellent here. The lake holds largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, redear sunfish, redbreast sunfish, and even rainbow trout during the cooler months when the park stocks them.

Best of all, you don’t need a fishing license to fish within the park—Texas Parks and Wildlife waives the requirement.

A fishing pier and boat ramp provide easy access, and the park participates in a tackle loaner program where you can borrow rods, reels, and tackle boxes if you didn’t bring your own.

Swimming is permitted in designated areas, and the water is surprisingly clear for an East Texas lake.

There’s a sandy beach and a floating dock that make for an easy afternoon of cooling off.

You can rent kayaks at the park, though some visitors have noted the rental process can be complicated—bringing your own boat, inner tubes, or paddleboard might be simpler.

The Cabins

For campers who want more comfort, Fort Boggy’s five cabins are worth considering. These modern, energy-efficient structures sit about a hundred yards from the main parking lot, nestled into the woods.

Each cabin is roughly 900 square feet and accommodates up to eight people.

The cabins include a mini fridge, microwave, table and chairs, bunk beds, and a queen bed. Outside, you’ll find a picnic table, fire ring, and grill.

They don’t have bathrooms—restrooms and outdoor showers are in a separate building nearby. Pets are not allowed in or around the cabins.

What to Know Before You Go

Reservations are strongly recommended for both the primitive campsites and cabins. With so few options available, weekends can book up quickly, especially during pleasant weather in spring and fall.

The park is open daily from 8 AM to 8 PM, with the office staffed from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Day-use entry costs just 3$ per person for ages 13 and up, with kids 12 and under free.

Pack accordingly for primitive camping: you’ll need everything, including water, food, and a way to pack out your trash.

The cabins don’t include linens, so bring your own bedding. And definitely bring bug spray—this is East Texas, after all.

Where Quiet Is the Point

Fort Boggy State Park won’t dazzle you with dramatic scenery or adrenaline-pumping activities.

What it offers is subtler and, for the right visitor, more valuable: peace and quiet in a landscape that hasn’t changed much in a very long time.

With just five primitive campsites and five cabins, it’s one of the smallest overnight footprints in the state park system—and that’s exactly the point.

Sometimes the best escape is the one where you can actually hear yourself think.
